Switching Virgin to Openreach

I’m currently on a deal with Virgin Media and paying £55 per month for the cheapest line,tv,broadband and weekend calls package. Virgin are offering this to new customers for £33 per month, £22 per month less than I am paying, they will not offer me this package.
Prior to moving to Virgin I was with BT but I have an out of date terminal box in my property. I have checked with a number of companies who use the Openreach service but none will give me a quote without me first signing a contract.
Given the potential issues with moving from Virgin to the Openreach network (and vice versa) I’m thinking of signing up with a new company who will come out and survey my property and then tell me if I will need to pay an installation cost. If this cost is acceptable I will then cancel Virgin. What concerns me is the changeover, it is essential that I retain my current landline number. How do I go about this?

Comparison sites just as uSwitch or mse own One will quote prices.
Its a good time of year to move. I heard good offers from bt and plusnet in the radio.

I moved from virgin to NowTV and kept my number. Nowtv costs £25/month.

    Some companies include free installation.

What type of master socket do you have for previous working BT connection?

Is it an NTE5A which has been around for last 3 to 25+ years?

How long have you been with Virgin ?

All the companies I contacted were open about the cost of installing a BT line, but I knew I needed a full installation.

It’s not a BT split socket with a test socket inside.
