If you don't really need and can resist the desire for for a new phone, go SIM-only at the end of your current contract's minimum term, finding the best price for your data needs among other networks and presenting that to O2 to see if they can match it when you ask for your PAC.

Otherwise, compare the costs of the new contracts you are considering with the cost of a new SIM-free handset purchased elsewhere plus accumulated cost of a suitable SIM-only for the period. You are likely to find that the famous 'upgrade' deal is something to be avoided.

You mention 36 months, are you looking at business contracts..?

O3 just default it to 3 years you should be able to use a slider to lower it but you could not upgrade and just keep your phone for when you need to upgrade if your phone did break

I think, 36 months means separate contracts for the phone (36 months loan) and for the airtime (24 months or less).
It's very easy to compare with sim-only and calculate to total cost of the loan/mobile. Most likely it will be very high.

So, you can pay the loan earlier and stop the mobile contract (if you wish).
The phone costs you £1156 plus extra £6 every month you keep the contract.
Makes no sense to me, especially when Three offer unlimited SIM-only for £10-£20 p.m. with big cashback.
why can't they Just use there Sim Only Prices
You can switch to SIM-only when your current minimum term ends.

What sort of contract is it?
If it's the same Refresh, just pay the remaining balance you owe for the phone.
