  • I have a Derbyshire Loyalty Saver that was opened in August 2007 and as I had been a member for 10 years I was on the full 8% for the first year.
Does anyone know what the current interest level will now be for me half way through my second year.

This account is apparently now closed and I cannot find any reference to it on the website or interest rates leaflet.
  • From Tesco's website
We are currently experiencing high demand for our Internet Saver account.
We aim to open your account within 10 business days but there may be a slight delay due to the demand. Customers can be assured that completed applications received on or by the 7th January will be eligible for the advertised bonus rate, provided account opening formalities (for example ID checks) are completed satisfactorily.

Curiosity - why the 2nd of the month and not the first? So long as it's in the correct month, the earlier the better, as I see it.

Just checking my issue 8 and looking at the T&C's on line for the issue 9 it does actually say 'to leave your bank account between the 2nd and 21st each month'. Hence I posted the 2nd.

The latest date of the 21st I assume is to ensure it is with the Abbey well in time for the end of the month but why the 2nd of the month I have no idea.

  • Hi Everybody,

I am on the internet this evening and I thought I would use the opportunity to do a quick update for this thread.

I think virtually all savings institutions have taken into account the last Bank of England base rate cut by now. The third best account on Martin's list of general savings accounts has an interest rate of 4%, so I am using that as my threshold for keeping accounts on my list (except the "feeder account" section where I usually leave accounts that are just slightly below this because of their usefulness as feeder accounts).

    I have updated the following:

    - removed all the "updated" tags to avoid confusion when the Bank of England reduce base rates (all interest rates are up-to-date having taken into account the last set of interest rate cuts)
    - removed the Derbyshire BS Loyalty Saver account
    - added in the Yorkshire BS Regular Saver Issue 2 (4.25%, no maturity date but limit of £20,000) to post 2
    - added in the Teachers BS Regular Saver account (4.35% for 1 year then drops by 1%) to post 4
    - updated the entry on the Tesco Internet Saver (feeder account section) to reflect the fact that the 1.5% bonus interest for 12 months will not be available to new applicants from tomorrow

    All the best,
    SS2

    Skipton BS Special Saver

Interest rate: 4.45% gross p.a. variable from 1st January 2009
    Monthly payment: £10-250
    Miss any payments: No
Penalty-free withdrawals: No early withdrawals but can close the account early without penalty
How to open account: Branch, post or online
Special conditions: After 12 months transfers to an instant access account. You can open up to 3 of these accounts.

I opened three of these on 23/1/08 thanks to this excellent thread :)

I opened each with £250 & have paid £250/month each month. This month's payments haven't gone in yet but will do so in a day or so.

Am I correct in thinking that interest will be credited & this will convert to an instant access account on 23/1/09 therefore I may as well close these & withdraw on or after that date?

    thanks

I spoke to them just before mine matured recently and they suggested I send my passbooks in before the maturing date with a covering note asking them to forward me a cheque, once the account(s) have matured, for the full balance including all interest , I covered this by stating the amount I expected to receive, i.e. £3000.00 plus interest in your case. I received cheques within about a week of maturity dates. (However it was the Christmas period so you may receive sooner now we are back to normal)

    regards

Otherwise it will convert to an account paying minimal interest.

There is also the first direct regular saver ISA which matures after 12 months, paying 7% tax free.

You have to have a FD current account and the ISA does not count as the additional account required to avoid their £10 fee if you don't pay sufficient wages in. You can get round the fee by opening an ordinary savings account with £1.

I'm hoping they offer it again in the next tax year - I have nearly filled up this year's one!
