Laura_Elsewhere said:I've posted this for friends, and thought I would post it in here for my friends here too...For those who don't know much about New Year's Eve beyond the partying... a small Hogmanay Basics Kit for youIn Scotland the tradition is that, a minute or so before midnight on the 31st, you open the back door or a window at the back of the house, to let the Old Year flee; then when the bells start chiming you open the front door or a window at the front, to welcome in the New Year...If there was ever a year most people want to ensure really goes right away, it's this one, so do make sure to open that door or window before midnight, right wide open, and let the year get away before the bells! And here is a photo of what is needed for First Footing, and I am brown-haired and tallish for a woman and I may not be a stranger but I can be a bit strange, so in lieu of anyone actually going house to house First Footing, you can produce this photo at the bells and consider yourself First Footed!(the tradition is that the 'first foot' over your threshold in the new year should be a tall dark stranger bearing gifts symbolising all you need for the New Year: bread that you may never be hungry, salt as a symbol of wealth, a lump of coal so you never go cold (a stone pig Victorian hot-water-bottle in this case!) and whisky for friendship...)
I've done a couple of Hogmanays in Scotland, the most recent in 2017. I remember a lot of whisky, a lot of toasts and lots of good fun and family. (The funniest part was Ian insisting on wrapping me in a Saltire "to decontaminate" because the shopping bag I brought my contribution-to-the-feast in was an English football bag.)

Thank you all for your company this year. My final tally is 36.5 coupons:
7 - 350g wool used for a childs jumper (possibly shouldn't count these as mine)
4.5 - 3 bras
12 - 4 fat quarters (impulse buy now sitting in the cupboard!)
5 - flat shoes
8 - trousers
Next year I will probably need more flat shoes, and a new jumper. Other than that, I should be OK. I won't carry any forward - I'll try to stick within the annual limit.
See you in next year's thread!5 -

One thing that this thread has made me do - I repair clothes more than I used to. Yesterday I decided to just pick up my sewing box as I wanted something in my hands and I repaired a pair of tights and a jumper with a hole under the armpit. The jumper I realised must be over 17 years old as I bought it when I lived in my bedsit. See you on the other side. Take care all.

Thank you for the’First Footing’ kit and advice, Laura! I doubt I will stay up till midnight, New Year has never been a big celebration for me and I’m very tired having not slept well for a few nights. I wish all of you the best for 2021, who knows what it holds but I hope lots of good things lie ahead.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Sorry to hear you’re not sleeping well, Polly. Hopefully tonight will be a better night for you.

I doubt I'll buy much in the remaining four and a quarter hours of the year, so my final total for 2020 is 26 and a half tokens spent, thirty nine and a half remaining.
I was going to make one of my New Year's Resolutions around only buying meaningfully but I think I've made some progress down that path already, over several years, starting when I realised that little treats bought in Primarni were actually filling a drawer, and I decided not to buy any more till I'd worn out some of the stash. By the end of the year I had given in to the extent, I think, of one pack of socks, and was realising it takes a very long time to wear things out when you start off with too much! Then came a bit of a KonMari phase in which I got rid of horribly-coloured socks and extraneous footwear. Last year I turned some loved but ancient tee shirts into tee shirt yarn (which I still haven't used). This year I have actually worn out some socks, but bought suitable replacements. there is a actually a little space in the sock drawer at last. I've bought only a few other clothes, due to uniform being introduced at work. I have an increasing stash of nearly-worn-out things that either need to go into landfill (Nooooo!) or find some new purpose, so maybe I need a resolution to turn a worn out garment into something constructive?
Watch this space. Maybe for a while...I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Happy New Year everyone. I will be staying up to see the year in with gin and ginger ale and possibly a track or two by Slade, if the mood takes me.
My signature is up to date so that means I've got 32 coupons left - mostly due to lack of temptation I suspect. No clothes-browsing in my lunch breaks. I do need to buy some 'office' trousers at some point (not that I'm in the office) and think I may splurge a little extra cash on something that will last. Strangely the fact I'm buying them because I want to wear them and not because work demands it at the moment is making me happier to spend money on them.
See you all over in the new thread.Fashion on the Ration 2025 - 1.5 coupons remaining

Happy New Year, Everyone! I've calculated the coupons left - I have 21 (85-64) as I carried over 19 from last year.It is my birthday today, and it has been just as different as Christmas was. I dont think I've answered so many calls in my life - phone, text and by Alexa! But its been a good one, in spite of being in Tier 3 and unable to go anywhere. My sister, bless her, made me a birthday cake, and drove 20 miles to deliver it to my doorstep. And I couldn't invite her in for a cup of tea and a slice of itSealed Pot Challenge no 035.
