Buying a double mattress - HELP

Hi all,
I am beginning research on buying a new double mattress... My current one is over 15 years old and my poor back has had more than enough of it. I am not in a huge rush - plan to buy in January sales once I am absolutely sure what I want..
I think I am going to go for pocket springs (as many as possible) covered in memory foam as my research so far seems to indicate this would be best.. However I know I need to put some time in at bed shops laying on aforementioned type of mattress to be 100% sure..
Basically I would like to know is if anyone has advice on somewhere cheap (and reliable) to lay my hands on one of these?
I have come across these people: http://www.bedsdirect.com/ Who seem quite reasonably priced but a quick google for reviews found some disatisfied customers. Has anyone used them?
Or do you have any recommendations on cheap suppliers / outlets (I live in London if that helps).
My budget is £350 - £400 at a push... would rather spend less if poss - any ideas?
Your help and advice much appreciated on money-saving / great mattresses for sore backs - thanks

have to say that you get what you pay for in more ways than one....
pay more get loads more pocket springs.....
a good quality mattress could cost you £700 easy!!!!!!!!!!!
as you say go and try some is the best way0 -
Can only re-iterate what has already been said - spend time laying on beds in different positions and take your time. Try out different stores and don't feel pressured into buying one by a salesperson.
I used to sell beds for a living (around 10 years ago) and it is amazing how people automatically go for the cheapest (and nastiedt) bed without trying it first.
The only thing I will say is avoid Bensons Beds (who I used to work for) - they are terrible for delivery and all aspects of customer service - just google them to see all the dissatisfied customers!
Any other questions, feel free to ask0 -
Yep agreed with the above poster - I too used to work for BB, they're a joke.
What kind of base are you intending putting the mattress on? If you have a sprung divan base you really should be replacing the base too.
Pocket sprung mattresses aren't really suitable for slatted bases.0 -
Myers make very comfortable matresses, don't know how you would get hold of one tho as my cousin used to work for them and gave me a bed.

As many of you will know I do sell beds, but I would like to make it clear that the advice I give on here is 100% impartial.
First of all, at your budget you will struggle to find a good quality pocket sprung/memory foam mattress in high street stores (even in the sales). You would be more likely to find one on line. Ebay is a good place to start looking.
I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:
1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller.
3) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the right choice because it will cost them if you return it).
4) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.
5) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).
Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.
As far as the number of springs is concerned:
You wouldn't believe all the hype you get from some bed sales people who say the more springs the better. All they want you to do most of the time is spend more money.
If a king size mattress has at least 800 pocket springs, then this is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. Some manufacturers make mattresses with 2000 or even 3000 springs in their mattresses (and then charge the earth). The truth is that in order to fit so many springs in a mattress, then each individual spring has to be so small and weak, that they break very easily.
I obviously can't give out any names on here, but I hope the information above is helpful.

When we bought our mattress, we went to a number of places like bensons etc tried them all out then googled for the cheapest supplier. However, once P&P et c was taken into account, it worked out cheaper to go to a small local independent retailer. We went to happynightmares.co.uk in bethnal green, picked up a realy niice silentnight number with free local delivery in the afternoon.
100% recommendation from happy nightmares if you live over that area. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
You can get top quality mattresses at low prices if you shop around on line.
That's strange.......the post I was replying to has now gone0 -
thanks for all the great advice! To be honest I hadn't considered eBay so will have a look taking into account your advice Tim.. (Am intrigued about the disappearing post!).
Perhaps if I buy online elsewhere I can try and go through one of those cashback sites... I haven't tried doing that before.
Andy, I wasnt thinking of replacing the base.. just to save money reallyYes I do have a sprung divan type one. It seems OK.. but I don't really know how much of a difference it makes to the overall bed experience! I was thinking I could just get a mattress now and in a year when I can afford it (have more pressing home improvements and holiday to fit in) I could buy a white wooden bed frame / maybe 4 poster to match my other bedroom furniture. Is that what you would call a slatted base?

In my experience the prices that items are sold for through cashback sites tend to be inflated in the first place.0 -
theres no way I would buy a mattress without trying it out
I'd go with Lynzpower, try out, shop around and find a small local independant shop.
If you buy online and you don't like the mattress then you have the expense (at least £20, assuming the supplier is amenable to taking it back if they consider it "used" as you tried it) of returning the item to the supplier.
Took me ages to find the right mattress, some were too hard, some too soft and some just plain uncomfortable !!Ex forum ambassador
