Thanks all for the contributions. Apologies for the delay in responding but the taxman's need took priority for a while!!
With your collective responses I have understood phone/sims a bit better (lots of good info posted), seen the light and managed now to transfer over the contacts by putting the new sim in the old phone and copying the phone held contacts to the new sim.
