Nissan Pixo boot, how to open?

Been to see a lovely wee Nissan Pixo 2009 and the only thing that seems very odd is that to open the boot, you need to press a little lever inside the car under the driver's seat, similar to the petrol cap lock.
There is a keyhole but the woman selling it doesn't have a key for it and has never had a key. They key for the car doesn't unlock the boot.

Seems as if there is maybe a problem with the lock because it doesn't make sense that it would be a different key for the boot.
Any thoughts anyone?

I don't suppose there's a button on the key fob, is there?

After a decade of never having been used, odds are that the key is the same one for the boot - but the barrel has simply seized through lack of use.

Try plenty of penetrating oil (no, not WD40 - use penetrating oil...) and gently exercising it. It'll probably start to work soon enough.

But a remote internal release isn't that unusual.

Thanks Adrian. Sounds about right. Thanks for the advice about not using WD40

Must admit I had to Google what a Nissan Pixo was - never heard of it before - obviously not one of the more popular models :o

The Pixo, is made in India. It is also almost the same car as the new Suzuki Alto, made on the same production line:

Many Asian car companies have an interior lever to operate the fuel filler cap. My own Hyundai iX20 has that and it does take some getting used to, but there is a button on the key fob that opens the hatchback (boot) lid. Look at your key fob: does it have 3 buttons? One to open the doors, one to lock them, another to open the hatchback door. There is no lock fitted to my iX20' hatchback, just a button under the centre badge which only works when the ignition key is taken out of the ignition lock.

Once I got used to it, it was fine and I would like every car I drive to have the same. It is actually an anti-theft device: the boot cannot be opened whilst the keys are in the ignition lock.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I haven't personally seen the key fob so can't comment on the number of buttons.
Dh has seen and driven it but I'm going to get it today hopefully. The lady has had the car for a few years and because she was told the key wouldn't open the boot, she assumed that she needed a different key which she was given when she bought the car, and has never bothered looking into getting the boot fixed.

It's only got 19k on the clock so is perfect as a wee runabout for me.

    19k in ten years

Hope you've seen the service history!

The engine has probably never warmed up properly in 10 years! Why are people seduced by ridiculously low mileages?!

I wonder if the tyres are original? If so, they’ll need changing.

    Quite.

A very low mileage "city car" like this is likely to be being sold because the previous owner has given up driving. So expect a clutch imminently, if it's manual, and look very carefully for repaired scrapes and dinks. Expect cheap and nasty tyres because there's no point putting good ones on when they're being damaged by being bounced off kerbs, with suspension bush wear.

It's a sweeping stereotype, sure, but it's one that is often based on reality.

Obvious reason for key not fitting boot lock is it has been crashed and had a second hand bumper and tailgate fitted but they forgot to swap the lock over.
