South_coast said:Thanks Cheery 😀! Yes, the journey to FIRE starts here - my £772.24 will currently give me £30.89 a year or £2.57 a month at a 4% safe withdrawal rate 🤣!
"From small acorns..."
I like to quantify those kind of numbers against a real world outgoing - that £2.57 might seem small now, but it would cover half my mobile phone bill for example. Before you know it, it will have doubled and could cover the whole mobile phone bill, then before long the TV license, then maybe the water bill, and so on
Do you have any short term targets?6 -
I was just going to comment the same SSS. I do the same with any money I have that I didn't have to do anything for, interest etc. Before long you will have everything paid for.Without overpayments: 15 years, 1 monthsBecause of overpayments: 10 years, 10 months left until paid off2

No targets yet, as I've still got loads to save up for in the meantime before I start actually adding to it 🙁 I keep cursing myself for buying a wreck of a flat when I could have got a proper one - then reminding myself it would have cost a lot more and I would still be paying for it forever 🙄! What I actually need to remind myself is that when I was looking I did have the search set up for ones which cost a lot more, but I didn't see any that I liked as much as the one I bought!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

OK, positives about the flat....
* The location. It's close to the beach and town, but it's really quiet and doesn't get any passing traffic/people
* It's got a sea view
* It's got a nice big lounge
* It's got lots of storage
* It's purpose-built, so no weird passageways or strangely-shaped rooms. It's also got a loooooong lease
* It's not got electric heating (no mad costs and it actually gets warm)
* It's got a separate kitchen (no having to look at my dirty dishes if I can't be bothered to wash up 🤣)
Thinking back, the only thing I would have liked to have had that I didn't get was a window in the bathroom, but I did get lots of things that weren't on the list 👍
Right, there's a bit of positive spin on things 😀 And the fact that it was left to fester for years, which made it cheap, was just the icing on the cake 😀Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

I agree, a sea view is awesome!We had a field view for 9 years. Then they built the first 50 of 3000 houses two years ago. Now we can see houses as far as the horizon.You can be safe in the knowledge that they won't be building houses in your sea view!!7

My home is perfect for me and my future self. Lots need doing to it. Every room needs decorating, needs new kitchen and bathroom, carpets, curtains, some electrical work and possibly the extension needs rebuilding. It is near a bus route, has parking, shops close by and a large overgrown garden with an apple tree. I have been looking at 3 bed new builds that cost around £100,000 more than I paid for my place. So everything is done up nice but the gardens are small, no shops, no community and have to drive everywhere. I would rather spend that £100,000 on this place. But I don't think it will cost that much, probably nearer £40,000 I hope.
I am starting small and doing up DS2 bedroom with new bed, wardrobe and bedside cabinet, carpet cleaned, a few electric sockets added and a lick of paint. I am guessing around £700 for the lot. Having it done will make me feel better about the other rooms that need doing and I will still be able to overpay the mortgage.
It sounds like you have a lovely place. Don't look at any property shows or magazines. That when I start to get down on my place.Without overpayments: 15 years, 1 monthsBecause of overpayments: 10 years, 10 months left until paid off5 -
Awww, thanks you lot 😍 I should probably clarify that the sea view is between the two buildings opposite (although I can still see both sea and beach) - but it's a helluva lot more sea view than 99% of the population 😀!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

Any sea view is a good one I say! I live 2 hours from the nearest beach and haven't seen the sea for well over a year I don't think 🙄 so have a little look out of your window for me! 🥰3
