Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only British English pedant!South_coast said:I think it's partly just the Americanisation that winds me up - I don't recognise words like "crosswalk" as being part of my language, so why should I have to pick them out of a line-up??? Plus it's very annoying when you're picking out bicycles and more bicycles keep appearing - how many times do you need me to do this before you acknowledge that I am a real person???
I'll join in with the UK English pedantry, especially when DD INSISTS on using 'exclamation point' and not 'mark'.

@themadvix, she doesn't, but she does heavily advocate the use of the interrobang - so she's not all bad ‽

It annoys me too. Actually crosswalk was not a term I've ever come across (despite working for lots of American companies) and I actually didn't know what it was. I had to guess in the end...themadvix said:

Lol. I always stress saying formulae at work in conversation. Just because Microsoft says formulas, it doesn't make it British English..Chiglepig said:themadvix said:

Ah, but according to the Oxford dictionary for writers and editors, that depends on context (at risk of outing myself here in terms of profession!)! That said, in maths it should definitely be formulae!Lol. I always stress saying formulae at work in conversation. It is always maths because it is boring figures and formulae required in spreadsheets.themadvix said:

@themadvix - in my day-today work I argue strenuously if favour of the dynamic nature of language change and refer to myself as a 'descriptivist, not a prescriptivist', but I think think the actual spelling is 'hypocrite'themadvix said:
