Florida car hire/purchase

Hi guys,
so I am looking to go to Florida for 3 months in January. I have been offered the chance to work remotely by my work (and I also work nights, so this actually makes hours more sociable!) and my Aunt also lives there so accommodation will be very cheap. the only stumbling block is car hire/purchasing.
so looking at sixt and the like, even long term hire is around £1000 for 2 months which is a lot. I won't need the car every day, but because its just so vast over there, public transport isn't really an option.
I have gone and got an international drivers licence from the post office, but other than hiring I think purchasing an old car over there and using it just to travel locally would be a great idea, and I could maybe come to some agreement with the garage to say right, I only want it for 2 months, will you agree to buy it back off me once im done with it etc et, something along those lines. Is this even possible to do for a UK citizen over in Florida? has anyone done it before? how would I then go about insuring it?
there is another option which is I get my aunt to insure me on her car(s) but I wouldn't want to do this really in case anything happened.
any ideas on this guys?

You do not need an IDP for Florida or anywhere in the US. You just need your valid UK photocard licence (or old paper one if you still have that version) There is a time limit on how long you can use it but it is not less than 6 months so far as I recall.0
