Blocking cash withdrawals

Annoyingly my wife keeps withdrawing cash on our Nationwide credit card by mistake - rather than our current account. And incurring the cash withdrawal fees.

Has anyone successfully got their bank to block cash withdrawals on their credit card ?

  • Yes they have, but it varies across provider.

    Give them a call.

Just cut up the CC and leave her with the DC

If she has a smartphone, add the CC to Google Pay/Amazon Pay and leave the physical card at home. She'll still be able to pay at the till for shopping, but won't be able to use an ATM.

    By mistake!?

Doesn't the message "Warning: Your card issuer may make a charge for this transaction" make her think twice? I mean, her debit cards don't make this charge do they.

Also, why have the same PIN for both? Changing the PIN to something different on the credit card would be an additional safeguard.

If the above don't work then take the card off her!

I have to say I do find the Nationwide credit and debit cards very annoying because they are the same colour and look identical apart from debit and credit written on them in not very obvious letters

Although I have never done what the OP says I have come very close sometimes

In the end I got a couple of small labels and wrote credit and debit on them and stuck them on the front of the credit card and debit card I thought they might come off but amazingly they don't and makes it very obvious which is Which

My "Select" credit card is silver, whereas my FlexAccount debit card is blue. Maybe you have their 'standard' credit card?

In my wallet my debit cards are at one side, and my credit cards at the other.

Maybe OP's wife could put her credit card(s) in a zipped compartment in her purse...well out of harms way!
  • Thanks chaps.

    Some good points above.

I’ve confiscated the credit card. She doesn’t have a phone that does NFC. I suspect it was deliberate given YorkshireBoy’s point about the warning message - so seems like the best course of action.

    I’ll see what feedback I get !
  • Good luck with that, Dave......lol

You may already know this but withdrawing cash on the credit card will also have had a negative impact on your credit file so it is an important distinction for your wife to make.

Halifax has this option in their app. Have a look round the settings in the app/website.
