can I be charged for a gas meter change

In August I changed supplier from Ovo to Yorkshire gas ,prev Daisy. in sept I noticed the meter window had a crack in it and condensation was getting in. This was a new meter ordered by ovo..
I reported it but National Grid said the order must come from my supplier. Yorkshire say they may charge me for replacing it. Help !
National grid said yesterday (28th jan) that yorkshire still not registered as my supplier.
still showing as ovo

  • Did you damage it? I would hope unless you damaged it they would be responsible for its replacement. Was the glass already cracked but only became a problem in the colder weather?

You could get a roll of waterproof clear sticky tape.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

national grid supplied and fitted the meter with a cracked perspex cover. I was with Ovo at the time. They requested the meter change. My change to Yorkshire went through just afterwards. in hindsight I wish I had refused to have it changed. I have not touched it. it is protected in it's own meter cupboard which is outside. the condensation is INSIDE the cover. Yorkshire Energy / Daisy suggested I use a hairdryer on it to clear but this sounds dodgy and at the moment I have NOT TOUCHED OR TAMPERED with the meter and feel this is perhaps the best policy
National grid who supplied it are their agents and so no, I should not be charged Energytwist

I take it you can still read the display ok? Is it a smart meter? If not, I wouldn't worry about it as it'll eventually get replaced at some point at their expense

no, it is not a smart meter. can you read a smart meter for billing the same as the actual meter? maybe this would solve the problem if I had one of those as it is only difficulty reading the numbers that is the problem

So you shouldn't have to pay. Every time a reading is requested contact them to explain this is not possible as the viewing glass is covered with condensation.
Hopefully this will only be a problem for a few months of the year, can you just ignore it. Once its dried out sellotape over the crack might help.

Hair dryer advice sounds like a call centre worker winging it. You shouldn't need to waste your time with nonsense which is unlikely to work.
