Ridiculous amount of gas usuage

Hi Everyone

i have recently moved into a new house, a standard 4 bedroom new ish property built in 2002. nPower suggesting my gas and electricity needs to go up to £400 per month based on how much i am using which seems ridiculous. Gas and electricity both seem very high. Having monitored it for a few weeks i a using on average 145 Kwh of gas per day and about 20Kwh of electricity per day and we barely have the heating and hot water on. The gas meter seems to turn very fast when the boiler is on. The boiler is a new Worcester bosch boiler only c. 2 years old

Does anyone have any experience of why the boiler could be using some much gas. Is it possible that the meter could be faulty or the boiler?

Your £400 is your direct debit amount, that doesn't necessarily mean it will cover your bill.

How long ago is "recently" when you moved in? Are you reading your meters and giving them to nPower? Did you read them when you moved in and told the supplier whoever it was (nPower?) the opening readings?

Note that we're in the coldest period of the year, so if you have electric fan heaters and other electric heating to top up the temperature with, you can easily burn through 20kWh a day in electricity alone.

In the last month I've used 132kWh of gas per day in a 3 bedroomed house, so your gas usage doesn't seem all that excessive.

Check that the meter number is the same as shown on the bill, and that imperial and metric units haven't been mixed up.

However, the electricity usage does seem rather high. Leisurely electric showers?

Read the OP's post again. They say they are using 145kWh of gas per day. That's equivalent to 6kW, 24 hours a day, every day.

That's possible if the heating is left on all day, with the thermostat turned up to tropical.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • I've used 90Kw over the last quarter in a 2 bed flat in Scotland.

Hot water is on demand, couple of leisurely baths a week (shower is electric), washing up, washing etc.

Heating goes on for an hour when really cold.

The DD has just gone up by £2.26 and it will go back down again in spring.

How often are you using hot water?
What is your hot water system setup?
How often do you have your radiators on for?
What setting do you have your radiators on?
How long do you have them on?

Increasing your payment to £400 pm is to clear the outstanding balance and try to get you on track to avoid being in debt, but of you are using that much a day, you are going to be in serious debt to them soon.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

I've clarified that post to make it clearer that my figure is also per day. :)

The second quote pretty obviously means using an average of 132kWh a day in the last month.

At this time of the year I probably use about 100kWh a day.

145kWh a day will cost approx £4 a day on a decent tariff; high but not earth shattering.

How recently? If in the last month or two then you would not have built up any summer credit.
nPower suggesting my gas and electricity needs to go up to £400 per month based on how much i am using which seems ridiculous.

You use more gas between October and April. So, billing it on recent use would not be unreasonable if you have no summer credit.

Without any data, they dont know what to set your your direct debit to. So, between you and them, you choose an amount.

Are the readings given estimates or actual readings? Have you given multiple readings yet?

Hi thanks for your response. yes meter readings are my own reading from when i moved in on 9th October and i have been taking daily readings over the last few days - yesterday i used 67 KWh and i was barely in - the heating and hot water was on for 2 hours in the morning and that was it.

How often are you using hot water? - only on for twice a day for 2 hours
What is your hot water system setup? - it is stored in a tank
How often do you have your radiators on for? - only a few hours per day as we have a log burner in the lounge
What setting do you have your radiators on? pretty low 2/3
How long do you have them on? only a few hours per day
