Earlier this year, I tried the May 2019 update on my Windows 10 Acer laptop. The ports stopped working and it made everything incredibly slow. I rolled back back to previous version and it has been fine.
Today, it forced the update on me, seemingly with no roll back function.
I now have no ports working, everything slow.
Could not have happened at a worse time. Dad in end of life stage and I am using my laptop for a lot of official things.
Is there a way round this for a non techie person? Or am I looking at a new laptop?
Happy Christmas Microsoft. I hate you!!!!

How about moving on to the Nov 19 update, as a first step, to see if that fixes the problem?0

If you post the exact model number of the laptop, someone may be able to point you in the correct direction. Which ports are not working ? If it is slow then a fresh install of windows may speed it up, and an SSD may also help. Tell us the model please.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . E15 is not enough on its own e.g. mine is F15 but on the right you have F5-573G-58GV
 Yours may be like E5-xxxx-xxx

Thanks. Had to go out. Will check later. It is an old model. May be time to replace.Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0

Tell us the exact model ... it may still be salvageable with an SSD and a fresh install of Windows. (This is MSE after all).
Keep the old HDD safe and you'd be able to recover files from it (assuming you're unable to backup any data from it if no USB ports are working).0

After the major updates, Windows 10 does a lot of "optimizing" in the background which kills performance on lower spec hardware. This can take hours and the solution is patience. Don't keep rebooting it to see if it will speed up like my mother did a couple of months back.
Leave it on without interruption, overnight if necessary, and it will eventually get itself sorted out and be operating at normal speed again. This won't help with your ports but should at least allow it to become responsive.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

            1. Let your laptop work for a few hours until WIndows finished everything it needs to do after the initial update.
 2. If a problem is still there - try checking for updates manually, it can show you a newer version with fixed bugs(which may include yours)
 3. Try rolling back your system to the date before the update( google how to do it, too long for a post here)0

            Two things spring to mind...
We have an old dual core AMD Aspire that works fine on Windows 10, latest update, it originally came with Windows 7. It might be nothing worse than needing the correct drivers, Windows often automatically installs generic drivers that may not work.
The Aspire had an incredibly sluggish hard disk drive, it took over 3 minutes to startup before the disk activity stopped! Replacing the drive with an SSD and doubling the RAM to 8GB made a huge improvement to the start time, it’s now just a few seconds.
I’m away for Xmas, so can’t give the exact model.0

I have to admit, I am a little confused - exactly which ports are not working? I assume you mean USB ports, but perhaps you mean something else. It could be a simple fix by installing the correct drivers.
Sorry to hear about your Dad, I know you aren't in the right frame of mind now. But it might be far easier to fresh install Windows 10 on the laptop (once you have what you need backed up) and install what you need to keep you going for the near future.
Plenty of people on here will be able to support you in installing Windows 10. Just be sure to have all your documents/pictures/etc backed up to an external source, such as a DVD or USB hard drive.0
