Sit in first class hide from inspector.
  • Has anybody noticed how similar Rydian looks to one of those characters on the Rice Krispie packet?

I got a strange story about this, bit long so please bear with me......

In 1984 on 4th dec my mum and I set out to go christmas shopping in manchester on the train (I was 12 and it was a school day tutt tutt). We had second class tickets but there were no seats in the second class carriage and predictably lots available in first class. My mum was umming and ahhing about sneaking in there to get a seat and eventually decided after discussing the matter with a young couple with a baby who were in the same predicament that it was the thing to do. The couple took the compartment behind ours.

Being, usually, an honest type of person, the guilt of this was playing on my mum's mind throughout the journey and she kept saying she was dreading the ticket inspector coming and that she wouldn't know what to say. She tried to read a book and I was sitting looking through the window and out of nowhere started to get visions in my head about train disasters I had seen on the news. Then I said these exact words: "mum what if the train crashes?" and she replied "don't be bl%%dy stupid, I'm more worried about what I'm going to say when the inspector comes".

Less than five minutes later the much dreaded visit from the inspector came and he said "tickets please" to my mum. She took the tickets out of her bag and was in the process of handing them to the inspector looking visibly worried about what she would say. He reached out his hand but just before he could grasp them the train seemed to brake very suddenly and he sort of disappeared from the door (of the compartment). Then the next minute I was being slammed into the (cushioned) seating in front of me. Luckily I could hear the baby crying from the compartment behind.

To cut a long story short, this had happened: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3989465.stm The train had collided with an oil tanker and the driver was killed instantly plus a passenger in the first carriage later died. Many people were injured, mostly those sitting in second class as the tables can cause a person's ribs to break in an impact. I suffered only a fractured arm and my mum was relatively unhurt.

At the hospital we saw the man (from the young couple) being wheeled through on a trolley looking much worse for wear than most. He managed to look up and joked to my mum "this is what you get for sneaking into first class".

The Karmic implications of this incident seem a bit confused so I still don't know whether to conclude that it was the right thing to do or definitely not the right thing to do!
  • I'd sit in first class, whats the worse that can happen?? You can only get asked to move!! Of course the inspector might not come along for ages you might have sat there an hour by that point so at least you got a seat for a while plus by that point if the train has stopped elsewhere there might be tickets!!

When i travel long distances, i always buy a first class ticket.
So therefore, i'm going to be rather upset if some random sits down without having paid what i have.
I was in the 1st class on a trans pennine train one time and i had my bag on my seat next to me.
It was peak time and millions of people piled on.
One woman asked me to move my bag so she could sit down.
I asked her if she had paid for a 1st class ticket and she said no.
I said i had, so therefore my bag was staying where it was as it was a first class seat only.
    She wasn't happy lol
just passing through.... Nothing to see....
