Flippin eck, how big is your hall?! I am most impressed, and very pleased to hear you have a petite bibliotheque in situ. Never too late to adopt smoking jackets and cigarettes in long holders with a cocktail 😁
I used to make my parents friends come into my library (a row of books in my bedroom) and take a book out, and of course kept a thorough list of the withdrawals and returns. I'm sure they were absolutely engrossed 😂

Re the shredder, my previous one (it was former partners', I didn't have to dispose of it) used to seem like it had broken but had just overheated and had to have a rest then was fine a couple of hours later so don't chuck yours out too hastily

The pot for the pre-Christmas treat is such a lovely idea.

I was thinking the same as PIP about the shredder. Mine does the same - stops dead when it thinks it's done enough.

Ditto re shredder issue. Mine will only shred a certain amount then decide it needs a rest.

Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

thank you for your comments about shredders.  unfortunately mine has not read the MSE memo about resting and starting again and is well and truly kapput.  Mr BC has dug around in it (unplugged it first thankfully), given it some oil and it just groans and moans (and not from pleasure!)
I was busy huffing and puffing about having to buy a new one when I'm trying to eek out our budget for the next couple of months when "ping" I remembered the "replacement tech and household items" pot which is fairly well funded so the spend can come from there.  Now to set aside some time to have fun browsing the online world of shredders!

@PennysIntoPounds - my house does have a big hall which was fairly wasted space and gives us a great excuse to abandon shoes, coats, boxes, bags etc there.  the little library used the space under the bay windows so its a bending down and peering type of library.  Like you I loved playing libraries when I was a child but never managed to get any human customers, just my toys.

I received another £50 credit from Octopus for referring a friend to them.  If the weather ever warms up I might end up finishing the winter with some credit on our account.

i went for a walk with DD and DGS to feed the ducks today.  It was so windy that as soon as DGS got out of his buggy it got caught by a gust of wind and careered off towards the pond at super high speed.  just as it was about to plunge headlong into the water the wind changed direction and it hurtled off towards the path.  I've no idea what we would have done if it had gone into the water - DD says she would have walked away as if it was nothing to do with her!

  • Fab about having and remembering the pot!

I have hall envy and am very pleased to hear you're making good use of yours. Surely space for a lil cocktail, cigarette holder, and smoking jacket annex 😁

The buggy incident must have been alarming but very funny to the cosily tucked up reader! I hope as a responsible mother you would have told DD to go and tidy her pond 😂

How nice that you could spend time with DD and DGD - despite the wind.

Well done for having a tech pot. I looked at a replacement shredder - but some are extortionate prices now...

I like your dry sense of humour.

I think it is lovely to feed the ducks with your grandkids in the same place their parents did.

How fabulous to carry on the duck feeding tradition in the same place 🥰

Your fly tipping reference reminds me of the time I mentioned I litter pick at the park across the road to a council member in charge of refuse at a park volunteer meeting. She asked me where I put the bags of litter I collected and for a moment I thought she was going to tell me off for fly tipping when I said I put them in the park bins 🤣 She was concerned I was putting them in my own bin by the way.

Well done with the eBay sale.
