Can they do this to my credit file?

  • Okay, so that's all fine....apart from the wrong default date. which would indicate the debt is newer than it actually is.

So the dilemma then becomes, do I contact them to amend it (therefore admitting its my debt) or just let it sit on my credit file over a year longer than it actually should?

Has the creditor or Lowell been contacting you in writing?

    Yes, TransUnion (darn autocorrect!)

Correct default date is December 2015, with nothing paid since then.

Well they may be trying to get you to make contact and reset the clock although it usually takes them a bit longer than 4 years to do so.

I'm guessing the entry only dropped off because the debt changed hands. It usually takes DCAs a few months to start reporting the debt themselves.

If you're intending on not paying the debt and letting it go statute barred then you need to be very careful about not acknowledging it. Not sure you can make a complaint about the default date whilst not acknowledging it though.
  • You need to contact them to ask them to correct the default date.

Which begs the question - why are you not making headway to make payments towards the debt?

Do you have any other debts or money worries? If so, then start a new thread in the main Debt-Free Wannabe (DFW) board for support, guidance and advice. :)
