zebra crossing

Options
Hi all,

This morning I failed to stop at a zebra crossing with the flashing beacons and I realised the was a girl there waiting to cross.

I know it is really idiotic but it seemed a little too soon to stop as a driver was right behind me. Although, the car infront of me still went ahead through it.

I am so worried as I am not entirely sure what the rules etc are for this, same as proper traffic lights id imagine.

Has anyone else done this?

I am a little worried now

Nothing to worry about - you should give way to the person waiting to cross if its safe to do so.

If you where going too fast with someone close behind you then it wouldnt of been very safe to slam your brakes on and help cause an accident.

Rule 195: Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

Look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross.
You MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing.
Allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads.
Do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching.
Be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

So if they put a foot on the crossing then you must stop - if they are waiting then up to you if you want to stop.

Have you passed a test in this country?

Whilst you are a bad person nothing will happen. Pay attention next time.

The rules are you must afford them precedence if they are on the carriageway within the limits of the crossing before any part of a vehicle has entered those limits.

However, there is still the more woolly worded dangerous or careless/inconsiderate driving.

Why? As has already been said on this thread and linked to, unless the individual already has a foot on the carriageway then you are perfectly entitled as a driver to not stop.

If you saw the pedestrian waiting and it was safe to stop, then it would be courteous to do so. If it was not safe, you shouldn't. But if the examiner considers that you failed to look for and spot the pedestrian, would that be lack of awareness/observation?
I need to think of something new here...
