I've had £300 deposited into my barclays current account 3 weeks ago (I've only recently looked at my statement) and I have no idea where it has come from. The description is a random 12 digit number and the reference is: FPS0000000000A7A BGC

    I am 23

Are you a pensioner by any chance, living with another pensioner? If so, it could be your Winter Fuel Payment from the DWP for the two of you.

It could be someone else's WFP sent to Afreeman's account by mistake.

No it is not a WFP. These are clearly shown as DWP.
Also by the misuse of the word random knew it couldn't be a pensioner and was a young person even before I read that they were 23.

Did you go into a branch the day of the payment?

Not uncommon for branch staff to still be sat in the previous account when making some actions.

I have been in branch and they say they can't help
Why do you imagine they are being so unhelpful? It is after all in their interest as well as yours to provide assistance to a customer and help get the matter sorted out.

I recently had a (much smaller) random sum deposited in my non-Barclays account. I called my bank and all they could tell me was that it was from a Barclays account. My bank told me I could keep the money. *Shrug*

In my case it was something like £2, so if the sender wants it back I can easily return it. I agree with others above - keep the money separate to your own if you could not easily find £300 otherwise, so you're ready to repay it if necessary. In the meantime, earn some interest on it :)
