HELP! Money put into my account and reference or name is a long number

Hello,
I do hope someone can help as my bank has been terrible.
I've had £300 deposited into my barclays current account 3 weeks ago (I've only recently looked at my statement) and I have no idea where it has come from. The description is a random 12 digit number and the reference is: FPS0000000000A7A BGC (there are different numbers to where the 0's are).
I have been in branch and they say they can't help and I have phoned them and they have given me the sort code and account number but won't tell me if it's from a company or a personal account. It's from another Barclays account.
I understand it's all data protection but no-one will help me with what to do next. I don't understand how there is not a procedure for this and how I can be the only person this has happened to. Why do transfers come through with just one long number? How can I find out where the payment has come from?
I have already asked every family member and I am not expecting any money in so I don't know what else to do. The bank have been really rude/not understanding as I am 23 just don't know what else can be done. I know FPS means it's an online payment but that doesn't help at all...

BGC stands for 'bank giro credit' and means any cash or cheques paid into your bank over the counter in a branch. ...0

Just have look at recent news items about a man whose solicitor paid a very large sum to the wrong account.

This problem is really simple.
Since you have determined it's not your money and you have no idea where it came from, DO NOT SPEND IT.
That way when the owner complains and Barclays comes to you, the money is still sitting in your account for the correct owner.
I read the story of the gentleman in the Guardian whose 193,000.00 went into the wrong account. His mistake was that he transposed one of his numbers which matched another customer, hence money went into the customer's account.
The customer should have checked that the money was actually his, but he assumed that the money came from his nan who died a couple of years previously.
Lucky for him he only spent a small part of the money and deposited the greater part into premium bonds.0 -
I doubt that it is a random number (i.e. the digits were selected randomly by a random number generator or being drawn from a hat or similar.)0

[STRIKE][/STRIKE][STRIKE]Are you a pensioner by any chance, living with another pensioner? If so, it could be your Winter Fuel Payment from the DWP for the two of you[/STRIKE].Apologies, daft comment, ignore me. Had overlooked that the OP gave their age.0
