Windows 7 .Help please

Hi all,
I have a Zoostorm Desktop running Windows 7. I only bought it 18 months ago, I didn't want Windows 10 because of all the problems.
Anyway, now I am getting messages on my screen telling me that support for Windows 7 will finish at the end of this year.
Does this mean that my present desktop will become obsolete?
I fear this may be the case so I am thinking that I should back every thing up to an External Hard Drive (I know nothing about it or how to do it!!!!)

I would be really grateful for any help or suggestions with this.
I'm really out of my depth :o:(

It means that you can move to Windows 10 at no cost. Windows 7 will still work, but may no longer be supported by Microsoft after Jan 14th.

What problems? Have you suffered any or are you just going on hearsay from years ago?

No problems with Win 10 for me.
    Found it very usable.

Technically all computers are obsolete as soon as they're ready to be sold but that's the way the system works.

There are no "problems" with Windows 10. Your current system will continue to work happily, it won't just keel over and die in January. You can upgrade straight to 10 from Windows 7, I would be very surprised if that machine didn't support it.

    OR....

you just carry on with W7 and just make sure you've got up-to-date A/V on there, and at least your hardware will continue to work as there'll be no W10 driver updates to stop various bits working....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Where do these messages appear? I am currently on Windows 7, and I haven't seen anything like that. I am aware that support is finishing from various sources, but not messages in the sense that I think of them.

You should be doing this anyway, for stuff that you don't want to lose. Of all the things that could cause loss of irreplaceable photos, documents or similar, end of support for the operating system is quite low on the list.

There's plenty of information "out there" on good backup strategies, you could start with an external HDD and just copying stuff to it periodically, and of course copying to "the cloud" is a very simple operation.

Apparently they are distributed through Windows Update, so it'll be a similar situation to the one XP received at end of life.

    Apparently looks like this:

Question. Why did you purchase an out of date operating system?

W10 is a very good operating system, I have it on three machines and no issues whatsoever. Do the upgrade to be fully protected in the years ahead.

    Yes.

Buy a USB stick (at least 8GB) if you don't already have one you can use.

Download and run the Win10 Media Creation Tool and use it to set up the USB stick as your installation medium.

Run setup.exe from the USB stick.

    Follow the prompts.

If that's too sketchy, then read this article.
