    If they want to keep the BBC ads free and "independent", just fund it from general taxation like many other countries do.

    As soon as it gets decriminalised I will stop paying the license, I only watch BBC on occasion, because i'm forced to pay for it, or risk a criminal record over trivial thing. As soon as there is an option to save £150/year it's out, it's more expensive than Netlix and Amazon Prime combined for fraction of the content. Screw that.

    TV Licence offences do not go on a criminal record, as such. The convictions are only recorded by local courts and TV Licensing themselves.

    I think it's reasonable to expect that decriminalisation will not mean that there is no longer any enforcement. The question is what will replace the current penalties, and whether the change in penalties and prosecution process will have any impact on the questionable investigative process.
