  • No although I didn't make claim until 1/10 it was backdated to 21/8 when my ssp ended without warning. I got a letter 1/10 saying my hb was being reassessed and to send statements, this was then awarded with sdp from the end of October
  • Award letter says I've been awarded contributions based but cannot claim income based and should claim universal credit for income based.
  • My pip I already was on from end of may
  • Btw according to gov website on esa there are clearly three types and it states newstyle is claimed with universal credit, contributions based and income based listed as the other two

New style ESA is what has to be claimed for all new claims unless there is a benefit with SDP already in place.it can be claimed at the same time as UC but does not have to be and new style ESA could be claimed by people already on other benefits.

Contribution based and income based ESA are two parts of one benefit. When someone claims ESA they should be assessed for both. If there i-ESA entitlement is greater than than their C-ESA entitlement they get C-ESA topped up by I-ESA, if it is less they only get C-ESA. However they can ask to be reassessed for I-ESA at any time.

Where is the letter from? Belfast or a different ESA office?

The puzzle is that the timing of your claim would indicate that you would have been required to claim new style ESA.

If you have in fact been awarded contribution based ESA then you are definitely entitled to be reassessed for income based ESA and this has nothing to do with whether or not you have an SDP (although obviously the SDP extra amount may be the only thing giving rise to an income based amount).

  • Sorry I'm not good with these forums.. Yes I got esa from August but it was a backdated claim that I made on 1/10. My hb notification said it was being reassessed from 1/10 too. By the time I got all info and statements sent they didn't award sdp hb until 28/10
Im told by advice agency the wording states you have to be getting OR entitled to sdp at the time. I was entitled but did not get awarded until the end October

Unless you live in Northern Ireland yourself this suggests to me a new style ESA award because I think all new style ESA claims are processed in Northern Ireland. However because DWP keep moving things around it is possible other ESA claims are also being dealt with there now.

In my opinion, i believe you're claiming New style ESA and not the old Contributions based ESA and this is the reason why you're unable to claim the SDP.
