Places that offer wood cutting

Hey guys, does anyone know of anywhere that will cut a piece of wood I have (just a straight line). Places like B&Q etc only cut wood that have been bought in their store.

Thanks

Ask friends/relatives/neighbours if they have a saw you can borrow?
  • it has to be very straight, so something specific is needed

Don't you trust friends/relatives/neighbours to cut straight? It's not rocket science.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

I'd say having 4 pieces at 40x15cm with edges that all need to match up is pretty close to rocket science. Hence why I need it doing properly, not with a neighbours wood saw.

it really isn't. even if that's hardwood anyone competent with a pencil, square and handsaw could do it.

If you can't do it yourself and friends and relatives can't help, then you could try to ring round and find an independent timber merchant that might do it, or if it's worth the cost then get a carpenter.

If the wood isn't anything particularly special, you might be better buying some more and getting B&Q to do it, they used to provide a number of free cuts and it's just cheap panel boards (MDF, chipboard, ply etc) it may be cheaper overall.

Is it solid wood, and if it is , is it hardwood or softwood?
Is it MDF, ply, chipboard or something else?

400 X150 mm (I do wish people would stop using centimetres!) and how thick?

DON'T use a jigsaw if you want anything like a straight edge.
If you use a handsaw, if you want the edges to join up, it will leave you with a good deal of work with a plane. If it's man made board, it's very hard on the plane blade

The best choices are, a track saw, a circular saw with straight edge, (making sure that the blade is parallel to the edge of the saw you will be running against the guide). Both these will take some jigging to cut a small piece safely. Or a table saw would be best, taking the usual safety measures.

Don't expect anyone to cut second hand wood with a saw that's not set up for it.

Worth a look if there's one near by as they might have a table saw.

Somewhere like B&Q isn't the place to get precision cutting done.
