Engagement ring damaged after resize

Hi everyone, looking for some advice re my consumer rights.
I got a custom designed wedding ring from a reputable local jeweller (with good reviews). When I went to view the ring it was excellent, but it was to small (odd as I got it made in the size they reccomended, and I had lost a stone in weight). They agreed to resize the wedding ring but said my engagement ring needed doing as well as they needed to be the same size. They said they would do this by stretching and I was very alarmed, but I was told verbally that this would not damage the rings at all and they would both return looking as perfect as they left. I wasn't warned that there may be any damage/changes in shape or issues. Reluctantly I agreed.
No contract was signed, and no money handed over (all to be done after the ring was approved by me). I have a contracted signed for the original ring being made, but not the resize, it's all been verbal.
I have images of the ring before resizing.
I recieved the resized ring today and my engagement ring is mishaped and has 2 larged noticeable cracks in the side. The ring is not a plain band, it is a twisted Celtic band and the cracks are in the centre of the twists. I am heartbroken, but they agreed to try and fix it by adding more.metal, and it still needs sizing up larger as they were unable to stretch it big enough.
What are my rights if I return and my engagement ring is damaged even after the repair. It was send to them in perfect condition.
Would I be entitled to have the ring melted down and remade properly given the stretching has caused significant damage?
Any ideas? I'm gutted and want to know where I stand. I have expressed my issues to the jewellers via email to ensure there is a written chain of evidence if they despite anything in the future.

The main thing is stay calm, very calm when discussing with them.
You have taken their ring to them for their professional expertise and you should expect them to be able sort the issue or at worst remake at their expense.0 -
Thank you for the advice,
I am going to take my mum with me as she often helps me stay calm in these situations.
I have emailed them already expressing my upset, why I am upset and asked what they are going to do about the issue politely.
We will see what happens.0
