Childcare Vouchers whilst on Mat Leave

Hello, my employer paid for my childcare vouchers whilst I was on Mat leave and only earning SMP. Now I'm back at work they say I owe them for the CV and I have to pay the money back. Are they allowed to do this? They are asking me to pay the full £243/month back but what about tax relief? Would HM Revenue and customs be ok with this? Any help would be appreciated. TIA
