  • I also got this message today from a sender who seemed to be the post office. They sent one yesterday saying I had a parcel to collect from our local delivery office, and when I showed the number to staff there, it seemed legit and there was a parcel to collect. Of course I didn't hand over any details to the scam, but it seems scary that it was on the same thread of messages!
  • I have literally just received a text message saying the same thing, I get this type of message fairly often and always delete them immediately if I am able I also block the message and report as spam. As a previous reply anyone supposedly giving away an iPhone 11 would surely not ask for £2 postage.

I recently watched a programme on cold-call scamming, and one of the things they do now is smishing (phishing by sms) - they can send you texts that use the numbers of genuine companies, and on your phone the message will appear in the same thread as other texts you have had from the genuine companies. Reading various posts above, it sounds like that is how this scam is coming through on your phones which is why it looks like the real thing.

We are most easily caught out when the scam message happens to coincide with something real in your life today. I've come very close a few times despite twenty-odd years of spotting hostile emails every day.

If in doubt, always hover over the link to see what pops up at the bottom of the window (ask for help with settings if this isn't working for you) as a dodgy URL is almost always obvious.

I've only once encountered a competition requiring a cash deposit from the winner, and they were pretty shady operators. No-one who is nice enough to really give stuff away will want your money! And the bigger businesses are very careful with their reputations.

    Safe comping.

p.s. with apologies for those on smartphones finding the above more difficult! I always comp on a desktop or laptop.
  • Same with me.
