If I were you, I'd be taking daily electricity meter readings, just to understand the pattern of consumption.

How old are the kids, do they camp out in their rooms with TV's X-boxes and other stuff, or even a crafty use of the fan heater.

In the end you have to monitor your meter a bit more frequently than once a month to see what has changed and when. It might have only been a couple of days but's pretty easy to ramp up 40-50kw in a day without noticing it.

As said above, most people have a relatively stable electricity consumption unless they use it for heating when it can increase alarmingly at this time of the year. A big jump in consumption can usually be attributed to a change of circumstance (say a big new telly, new baby, new appliance - dishwasher/tumble dry etc) a faulty appliance or one that has been inadvertently left on.

I can see a big increase in our consumption when the washing machine, dryer and dishwasher are all in action on the same day
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

We do have a small electric fan heater but don't think we have used it that much? Surely it would need to be on round the clock?

Electric heating is 100% effective. You run it for an hour it uses 1KwH of electricity. If you were to leave it on 24hrs a day it would use 24kWh, 720kWh a month.

Assuming 1kW and thermostat not operating. I have a small(physically) fan heater, but it is 3kW

Kids are 11 and nearly 17.
Yes 11 yr old always on xbox.
He has been using fan heater a bit past couple of mths. Have confiscated it now lol!!
Also sometimes 17yr old daughter does things like puts the oven on to preheat intending to cook a pizza at 2am and then falls asleep:mad:
She sometimes puts things on the tumble dryer to get the creases out and forgets about them too so it's running for 1hr with one dry top in it. Fml

Just as a general guide, we're using on average 5.9 Kwh per day at the moment.

We have all the usual white goods etc. plus a tumble drier, our biggest guzzler. No fan heaters though - they're a definite no no. Also no kids at home!
  • Lots of sensible help posted above.
Do take note of the calculations providec and scale them up according to the high power appliances in use, heaters of all kinds (fan/other room heaters, cookers, water, dryers).

Other uses do accumulate especially if on 24 hours per day but usually far less significant in total.

Sounds like you have a bit of educating to do!

Might also be worth double checking your readings in case of a reading error?
