Keyboard and mouse use on a bed

I think I'm going to get my son a desktop pc for use in his bedroom,he is limited for space,so will be sitting on his bed with pillows and duvets behind him for support, just wondering if anyone has been in the same situation and has a tip about what to places keyboard and mouse on?

The keyboard just needs to be flat, and an optical mouse will work on any surface providing its not reflective.

You could use something like this for the keyboard and mouse in normal use:

Hi thanks,my son is at an awkward age(17) and can be a pain when it comes to him having exactly what he wants, but I think you're right he's just going to have to get used to doing as you say just having them on the bed,he said he wanted the keyboard and mouse on the same level as that's what it was like when he used his laptop and mouse on a little table, but he will have to have his key board on his legs and a mouse on a mat to his side

Keyboard on lap, mouse on a hardback book on the bed next to him.

Wireless keyboard and mouse obviously much better in this scenario
  • Thanks,I shall have to have a look at a wireless keyboard and mouse

What about one of those adjustable height over-bed tables (so you can have breakfast in bed!). I've used one of those by my armchair to use laptop and mouse. Some time ago I also saw some specifically for laptop use.

    for example https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8650971

    I use this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Windows-Android/dp/B00XJ3LVPI/ref=sr_1_1
but it's not ideal if you need to use the mouse constantly (it's more of a 'sofa-keyboard')

A desktop PC needs space for the PC itself, a monitor, speakers, and such. Can get a little uncomfortable after prolonged use without a proper chair and desk. What's your son going to use the PC for?

If it's just youtube, web browsing, netflix, etc then a good tablet would be more than enough (can also add a chromecast or other casting device to play movies and such on the TV).

If it's all of that and uni work (word processing, spreadsheets, email, etc) then a laptop might be a better option. Some of the more expensive laptops are also pretty good at gaming as well, just don't expect max graphics quality.

If he's wanting a proper gaming machine with 4K detail and such or video editing and encoding where proper processing power is needed, an expensive desktop is really the only option. But any prolonged use is going to get uncomfortable without a proper chair and desk in my experience at least

Modern TVs and computers you could just plug them into a modern HDMI television, no need for a separate monitor then. Course you can't watch TV while using it but that's the way it is.

He has a double bed and there is a space at the foot of it and facing it is a chest of drawers with a 32 "tv which he will use as a monitor
