Is there a dvd that skips the boring bits?

Hi

I want a dvd player/recorder that doesn't force me to sit through the boring bits at the start of a film.

Is such a thing available off the shelf? Or, is it easy to convert a Panasonic say?

  • Sorry, Have I missed something?

Just use the fast frame forward, or you could jump from chapter to chapter

If you are talking about trailers, trailers serve a double purpose; they help you avoid the films you don't want to see, and give you a chance of seeing a bit of a film you have anticipated wanting to see.
  • My sony dvd only shows it once, if I put in the same dvd again it goes to the start of the film, the kids have a disney film that at the first playing had about 20 minutes of trailers, I've never seen them again, or maybe I fell asleep, I expect there is a list of boring films on the internet that could save you several hours of boring dvd's, let alone the begining, Shrek 3 for me was a let down, that must have been 2 hours I've lost....as to cutting the start being a feature I'm not sure.

I think it's dependant on the individual discs and what mechanisms they have in place. Most don't allow you to skip the copyright parts etc. It's a fundamental part of the copy protection so I doubt there's anything you could buy off the shelf that would bypass it. If there were any methods to mod the player I doubt they'd be legal or allowed to be discussed.

I know most don't allow you to skip the copyright parts, but arethere any? I seem to remember there being one or two a few years ago.

As for this "feature" being "a fundamental part of the copy protection"

I don't see how forcing your customers to sit through 30 seconds of Legal notices will prevent copying.

There can't be anyone left who doesn't realise that commercial copying/piracy of a dvd is illegal.

This forced indoctrination by the studios can really ruin the mood!

What I mean is that the forced non function of the skipping will be encoded into the general copy protection mechanisms already in place on the disc. don't necessarily condone it, but I think in order to get around it you also have to get around the copy protection mechanisms. Whether copy protection mechanisms in any form are effective against piracy or merely intrusive upon genuine purchasers is for another discussion altogether.

    Nope, AFAIK.

You can normally fast forward them though, so the mood is not spoiled.

However Your other option is to connect your PC to your TV and run the DVD from the PC with the appropriate software which will bypass all the adverts and go straight to the main film.

Depends how much it bothers you

Also isn't that the ideal time to make the popcorn etc. Usually I play the DVD while everyone is milling about and settling down and then play the movie and pause instantly so the movie can get going instantly the moment everyone is ready. Just a minute or two of prep time usually, really which I don't find is too intrusive at all.

  • Yes, I know what the OP means.

I have some ex-rental DVD's in my collection, and these also advertise other newly available films as well. Some discs allow you to "Fast Forward" or "Next Chapter" to the main feature, some don't.

Maybe if they used the old "Pearl & Dean" music, an ad' for an Indian restaurant that hasn't been redecorated for 30 years and a screen asking you to turn off your mobile 'phone, it might actually "set the mood", though.

  • All DVD players come with a button to skip the boring bits, it's called the Eject button.
