The right house that was meant to be, will come along!

I hope my story goes the same way as yours!

    Another house will come along.

You need to try and not compare other properties to the one that got away though, otherwise you will never find anything else.

I lost my "dream" home and now I'm glad I did. I look back and think - I'm so glad didn't get that one, it wasn't meant to be and this is much nicer, better location, better garden and in fact better everything! It has meant an extra year camping in my daughter's study but even my son-in-law (!) agrees it's a far more suitable house and worth the wait.
  • We got out bid on 3 properties and pulled out of a sale due to a bad survey before finally getting our new build.

We look back and laugh now thinking how much of a horrific mistake it would have been if we'd have actually bought the others.

The house we've ended up getting trumps all the others in every way shape or form, yet at the time they were 'the one'.

    Something better awaits.

We found what we thought was the perfect bungalow a few years ago. We put in an offer which was accepted. 2 weeks later the EA phoned and said they had changed their minds and were going to keep it.

We were disappointed and carried on looking. We soon found another bungalow in a village much closer to work and as soon as we saw it we knew it would be perfect. It had a large garden around all sides and had 2 ponds, a greenhouse, a workshop, separate shed and a closed off vegetable garden. :D

we made an offer to the EA there and then which was accepted. He went back to his office and we stayed on for tea and cakes so we could have a long chat about the garden. They were a lovely elderly couple who couldn’t manage the garden any more.

Everything went like clockwork, we had sold our house and there were no delays so we were soon in our dream home.

We only sold it when we moved 200 miles :(

I'm going to take a contrary line and say that a 'better' house won't necessarily show up. You might think it's better, but none of us knows which is good, better or best when making a choice of property.

Unless you believe in pre-determination, then any property, regardless of how marvellous it is in a physical sense, may be prove good or bad for you and your family in the long term. The only thing you can be sure of is that life will be different if you buy property A rather than property B.

The best people can do with disappointment and mistakes is learn from them and then move on.

Most of us oldies will have missed-out on a house or two, but with 20:20 hindsight we may also marvel at our lucky escapes. To quote a certain Craig Revell Horwood, the property we most regretted losing would actually have been, "a total disaster, dahling," had we known what was coming towards us at the time.

Get out the tick list, go back on Rightmove and, eventually, go with your gut.

I'm a bit more like Davesnave. I always think well, it wasn't meant to be then was it.

We can't always see the reasons - you might not find an obviously better house - but who knows what might have happened there or been wrong with it.

As the saying goes, 'God works in mysterious ways...'. Try to believe you've swerved this one for a reason.

(Non-religious here, btw, but slightly spiritual and it seemed apt!)

  • Don't you worry...it happens all the time! I was gazumped when my offer had already bene accepted a few months ago..which hurt a lot as I was so worried about finding the right property. But I did find another I liked just as much eventually, and I'm currently in the process of buying it.
