Good outcome and I'm happy for you :)

Take away lesson is to be firmer, sooner....idiots like this sense a (?) "weakness" in others who's natural tendency is to get along with others; telling him you would "think about it" probably gave him the green light to try it on.

Be nice if the world was filled with decent, considerate people; it's not.

This is old fashioned and will be mocked by the "right on" brigade here, (but it's served me well over the years).....there's a time to play nice and a time to harden the **** up; life's easier when you work out the distinction!

    Enjoy your new house :)
  • From what I've read, it sounds like the vendor wanted 2 grand in cash for a load of old tat (not added to the house price or mortgage) which is completely out of order and I'd have certainly told the estate agent about it if it was me.

Our vendor left wardrobes, white goods and some other stuff, but this is because it was too big for him to move and it was free. It's also saved us buying it for a while until it needs replacing, so that was good. I'm glad you've worked this one out, but remember that anyone can do anything until contracts are exchanged so I'd be wondering if this is just the start of his fun & games.

    Agreeing with Skiddaw.

It may cost him more to junk/store the furniture than leave it so you may end up with a house full of furniture, including the wardrobes you want.

Glad the thread has helped you, OP... You really need to google the price of new wardrobes before getting into this kind of thing. The vendor basically was asking you to pay him so he could avoid having to pay for a skip; not cool.

It is true what another poster wrote; once treasured, expensive items are worth diddly-squat second-hand unless they are valuable antiques. Most furniture does not come under that heading.

Good luck with your move. If this house does not work out, there will be another, better one... Possibly an unfurnished one. ;)

Stand up for yourself! No-one else will, except maybe on here.
