OK, so 1.5 days is 12 man-hours (tho there was no mention of that being one person).
    2 people working 4 hours is 8 man-hours.
So, if I give benefit of the doubt that he reckoned 1.5 days for 1 person (seems unlike buy hey ho) then I've paid 50% more than time estimated. That would mean £433. But, as long as it past 2 winters I suppose all is well.

    cheers

You assume they work an 8 hour day.

Having watched how our roofers worked, it's easy to see how two people would get the job done in less than half the time of one person working alone. Carrying stuff up there alone would be very slow, for starters.

If I were you, I'd be happy that the job came in at the quoted price and was finished quicker than expected, meaning that you have a dodgy roof for less time and less time with people clanking around up there.

Forget about man-hours it's totally irrelevant, he quoted for the job, and £650 for 25 slates plus some repair of mortar, presumably around the hip/ridge or chimney is fairly reasonable. Just think yourself lucky that it didn't require the use of scaffolding because you would be doubling, probably tripling that cost.

Whenever I get someone round to sort my roof I couldn't care less how many men are on the job or how quick it takes as long as the job is done right and to the price agreed.
  • There are a few prickly replies lol
Blimey, someone broke it down to hourly rate, so I have done too. So no, of course I would not pay extra if it took longer than quoted for blah blah blah...
I think its fair to earn good money on one job and not so good on another and it all balances out. All I was thinking out loud was does this quote sound dodgy or not? I wasn't suggesting the roofer be executed for making a good amount on this job.
So, thanks for the replies, the sane ones sound like it's probably ok as long as it wasn't a cowboy job, so we'll have to wait and see!
    Cheers :):)
  • Hourly rate excludes the time he took to quote for the job, visit you etc.

As others have said, if it’s works it’s money well done. And yes I’m considering a career in construction lol

As per a few of my other posts I'm doing a self build loft conversion just now.

I have the luxury of scaffolding but even so being on a roof at this time of year is intimidating, scarey and very very slippy. Scaffolding costs a small fortune and is a life saver.

If he's done a good job in a time frame of your satisfaction then I think it's been worth the money and mitigated any risk to you from doing it yourself.

A leaky roof will cause you no end of expensive issues so considering it a good price to pay for eliminating future worry, time and money.

Just buyer beware that next time you'd negotiate the price at the time of quote rather than after the event now you have benchmark what can be achieved by two people in a shift.

The other answers have been a bit shirty but you can perhaps see their point that it's been done to a good standard in under the time specified.

    Hope this helps
