  • Podcasts (spoken word), gum, window down, coffee, stops for air/stretch legs. Any and all of those. I do a lot of driving as part of my job.

If you're getting bored on British motorways, you simply aren't paying enough attention to what stupidity the traffic around you is up to.

Depends on the road, I've spent far too long on some essentially empty motorways and dual carriageway to let other traffic keep me amused.

I'm really enjoying audiobooks on long trips, makes it feel more productive and seems to be less likely to make we want to press on.
Keep hydrated, you'll feel better for it and it'll help you get suitable breaks. Plan to stop every 2 hours to at least have a walk about.

Also on long drives you'll see plenty of impatient and bad drivers, just leave them alone and don't feel like you need to keep up. The time difference on arrival isn't worth going faster

Hence me asking (repeatedly) for a bit more detail about what the OP means by "long journey". Because even in the wee small hours on pretty much any of the core European motorway network, there ain't such a thing as "essentially empty". Get towards the sparser-populated fringes of the continent, sure.

But are we talking about M25-Midlands, LE-JoG, or Southampton-Nordkapp...?

I guess it depends on how you define essentially empty. I do most of my travelling in late evening (visit customer, have dinner, hit road) and I've been on plenty of major trunk routes where I'm the only car I can see for a while, or there's maybe 1 or 2 vehicles in view. Definitely not enough to keep you entertained.
I don't spend much time in the south east though.

If you go back to page 1 the original poster said they often do about 250 miles, often Hampshire to Newcastle etc.

Ah, thank you. I'd missed that.

So only ~5hr or so, and not exactly on roads that are going to be boringly empty.

I always like an audiobook for a long drive. Keeps me alert and makes the journey pass more quickly.
