I slap myself in the face. It's refreshing and wakes you up.

    Passengers don't like it.

Be well rested. Make sure your vehicle is good to go e.g. tyre pressures, fuel, oil. You have your entertainment & nibbles sorted out.

Overnight long distance driving can be better option as the roads will be clear though beware of road works.

Be especially careful driving late at night after a long day. Stop as soon as you feel yourself falling asleep, regardless of the usual "take a break every 2 hours" rule.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Chewing gum or picking your nose keep you alert.

Get off the motorway and then get back on at the next junction. Windows open whilst at slower speeds. Having something to concentrate on (navigating junctions etc) will help you keep focus. It's the boring repetitive motorway bit that makes you tired.

If you’re so tired you need to do that s, you need to stop and rest.

I just stop when I need the loo; could last 4-5 hours in my youth; now not much more than 3.
  • I download old comedies off Radio echoes I just listened to a bunch of them on a 300 mile drive.
I don't listen to the BBC its bad for my blood pressure.
  • Thanks people! Some seriously good advice here... exactly what I was after. I do a lot of 300 mile+ journeys lately; Hampshire-way to Newcastle/Durham etc. sometimes then over to the West and onto Wales. Not in the same day, but 250 mile a trip in one sitting is typical.

I've made a few music playlists up but like someone said, its the repetition of the M-ways that bore me. A roads are so much more interesting :D

Podcasts are great for concentration, yes! I need to use them more often. Drinks and snacks also need investigating. I agree about the chewing gum tip!
