How to dispose of old sofa?

we've had our current sofas for 7 years theyve lived through the kids being babies and up to now so they're not in great condition.
We had to have our front window removed to get them in the house as we have an awkward porch door.

We will be ordering new sofas on the weekend again we'll have to have the window out to get these in and old ones out.

But what do we do with the old ones? They are good for nothing and need to be destroyed/recycled or something? Council do pick up but say no excessivelt heavy or bulky items - well i assume this rules them out and it is a big heavy corner sofa and 4 seater.

Any suggestions welcome?

Thanks

Phone the council or look on their website. I'd expect a sofa to be considered a bulky item.

Do the council not pick up bulky items for an additional charge? Ours takes sofas but you pay according to the size of the item and you need to discuss how many people it will need to shift it.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

The council website for bulky items says we will collect furniture or domestic appliances that are not excessively large or heavy, including waterlogged items.

i think i will call and ask them as i would say it is excessively large and heavy

Where I live the council charge £35 per item.
I don't know if they would consider a large settee more than 1 item!

What I usually do - assuming the sofa really is good for nothing apart from the tip - is cut it up into manageable chunks and take it to the tip. It's usually not difficult - use a Stanley knife to rip through the fabric, then saw through the wooden frame, job done. Sometimes a bit of gentle persuasion with a sledge-hammer makes the job quicker.

I do use a hand-saw rather than a circular saw for fear of hitting a nail or metal fastening (of which there will be many) and doing myself an injury. But it'll not take long, and you can cut it up into whatever size chunks will fit into your car.

Before you take you windows out many sofas today are made to go through small doors. Either the arms or backs come off.
This is especially so with recliners where the backs just slot in and 3 or 4 seaters come in sections that bolt together. Talk to the retailers.

Cut it up into smaller pieces then take it to the tip. You can then put the components into the correct skips for recycling.
