  • Yep same probkem here. Stove installed 2 days before I noticed how bad the smoke was coming back into the room. Even worse on a calm day. I’m hoping the installed will replace for a different make although the wife loves the style.
  • Yes , exactly the same here mate ,we love the look but that’s where the love ends . My supplier stoped answering my calls now . Well disappointed really .

there shouldn`t be any smoke when burning. If you have smoke - something is wrong with either the air fuel ratio or with the fuel itself.
wood should burn nearly smokeless, but i would maybe look to the at the chimney. I stove and stove should be designed, that heat and smoke will be transported with the draft up and outwards. If there is no draft, of course, the heat and smoke will move into the area where there is lower pressure than in the chimney, like when you open the door into your room.
  • Had the installer round today, he has cut down the throat plate and removed the plate that sits behind that. Fire burning much better and no smoke but just worried about the efficiency of the fire now.

so no smoke - means its a complete combustion -> all carbon has been burned and converted to heat rather than into smoke and pollution.
  • Had an Arundel XL installed yesterday and experienced all of the same as above, then found this thread :-(  It was very windy yesterday and we are in an exposed position with a relatively short flue (about 4.5 meters I think), so not ideal conditions, and only a first small fire per the manual.   I was curious whether others experiencing the smoke leakage/blow back have installed the “wood kit” (additional liners - part number B-1009417)  that is mentioned in the manual or are you in “multi fuel” config (out of the box/off the shelf).  Anyone tried a “magic” vowel to improve draw?
  • I had installed the wood burning kit but unfortunately it just made it harder to light and didn't help much with the smoke. I've just been in to stove shop that said they sell lots of them with no problems. However I'm still dubious as looking at this forum there are several of us now with this problem.

Did you manager to sort this issue out. As I’ve got the same problem with mine.
    Hi m40ttc
I have spoken to the OP and unfortunately he has still got the problem. I have also just bought this stove and having similar problems. I am currently in conversation with the dealer and Flavel as I believe it is simply a bad design and is not fit for purpose therefore we are entitled to a refund or swap for a working stove. However I have actually managed to fix my stove by making a piece of metal and clamping it at the top and essentially making the door opening slightly smaller. If I don't get a refund and I keep the stove I will bolt this piece of metal in place, paint it black and use it like this. It actually looks fine and works well with this modification.
    I will keep you updated.

    Kind regards

Thanks for your reply. I forgot I had posted this.
I should of complain to the supplier when I first installed it, as I fitted it myself I wasn’t sure if it was something I did.
I brought another throat plate and cut a couple of inches off it which did improve it but still not completely solved it.

How are you getting on since this has been done?
  • I was looking at this stove today in a shop and when you compare the 5 inch flue outlet to other 5 inch models it looks like a very small and restrictive hole compared to others. I think this may also be contributing factor.
