thank you everyone for your replies and apologies for the delay in responding (been ill). I know it is laughable and a long shot but worth trying just for the principle

In response to Fosterdog the box is damaged on a corner at the bottom so it is quite clear that it was dropped or damaged in transit or whilst kept at the shop. If it was damaged due to temperature, the damage would be widespread and not confined to just one corner at the bottom. The box was also well wrapped up in thick bubble wrap and was sealed with a "Fragile" tape all around it which is, as you said, unusual . So, to me it would be a sign that it was put on when dispatched. Anyway I will let you know what happens.
    What principle?

    Certainly not one of yours.

Look on the bright side - if you try you'll give the whole staff of the store something to laugh about at their xmas party.

Be light relief from the moaning about contracts.

    Hi OP

I think you know the answer to your question now.

It is always a good idea when buying something for which you have no immediate use to thoroughly inspect it before storing it.

I have been caught out a couple of times on this point.

Sorry if it’s a bit of a “horse bolting and stable door” suggestion but it may help you and others in the future.

If its gone brittle then I know from experience that it takes very little to damage them. Are you really sure that you haven't dropped it on its corner when getting it out/transporting it.

After 5 years on a product costing £17.99 you have very little hope of any refund/replacement now
