damaged item

Options
I purchased a Wham 160l Crystal box and lid clear in 2014 on line from ASDA. I did not needed it at the time and, therefore, I took it directly from the store I collected it from to a container unit at our local Self Storage facility still in its original packaging for safekeeping until I needed it. The container has been closed all these intervening years as I had no need to access it.

I collected the box yesterday from storage as I needed to move some items. To my dismay, when I unpacked it, I discovered that the box was damaged.

As the box was still in its original packaging (which I have retained along side the packaging label) until I unwrapped it yesterday and it had been safely stored in storage unit which no one had accessed all these years, I have to assume that the box had been damaged in the delivery or whilst held at your Rugby store.

I do realise that the box was purchased in 2014 and that I should have checked it at the time; however, given these particular circumstances, could I ask ASDA to replace the box with an equivalent or refund me the original cost? I know it is a long shot and I am possibly relying on someone's goodwill, but it may be worth trying. Any advice is greatly received but please be gentle: no jokes about my silly question :) (I am an old man!). Many thanks

I think it would best just to buy a new box.

    You can ask, certainly.

But on the balance of probabilities, what do you think anybody would consider more likely - (a) the item was already damaged when you bought it 5+ years ago and you've just taken your time to notice it, or (b) something has happened to it since then?

Yes no harm in asking but really, are you really going to go in store and ask for a refund/replacement ?

    Id just buy another.

Seriously are you kidding here or what?
  • Had to look up what a Wham crystal box and lid is.

I'm sorry, I know you said no jokes, but that is laughable. No harm in asking of course, and I can't rule out the exceedingly slim possibility of ASDA helping out for PR purposes (picture in the local rag or a tweet), but do be prepared for them struggling to contain themselves when saying no.

What sort of damage did the box have? Any damage to the packaging? I've never seen these types of boxes with any form of packaging before, I've only ever seen them sold as is. That type of plastic can easily become brittle from temperature fluctuations, while they are storage boxes they are generally meant to be used in the home and not left in a storage container for several years so it is possible that it's the incorrect storage of the box that's lead to it becoming damaged rather than it being damaged before you purchased it.
  • thank you everyone for your replies and apologies for the delay in responding (been ill). I know it is laughable and a long shot but worth trying just for the principle

In response to Fosterdog the box is damaged on a corner at the bottom so it is quite clear that it was dropped or damaged in transit or whilst kept at the shop. If it was damaged due to temperature, the damage would be widespread and not confined to just one corner at the bottom. The box was also well wrapped up in thick bubble wrap and was sealed with a "Fragile" tape all around it which is, as you said, unusual . So, to me it would be a sign that it was put on when dispatched. Anyway I will let you know what happens.

You are braver than me to try, I'm not sure I'd have the cheek. I'm not even sure any receipts I had could be found after so long and still be properly readable.

Or equally it was quite clear that you dropped it in the intervening 5 years.

I thought this may be some sort of Wham fan memorabilia but sadly you're talking about a plain plastic storage box aren't you?

    Principle? :rotfl:

That hardly excludes the possibility of it being damaged after you bought it.
