Whats the maximum speed i can get from a ISP ?

I am getting 7-8Mb connection speed from my current ISP. But i want to get faster connection, so i today called them and they told me thats the maximum speed i can get from my current Bt line. I checked BT site by entering my phone number, it shows maximum 6Mb speed i can get for the line.
But my question is then how other company like O2, Be There offering 20Mb/24Mb speed ?
then which company telling the truth ?
I don't know too much about LLU. is there any connection between LLU & speed ?
Thanks

You are limited by the technology being used for your broadband connection,
BT mostly use ADSL max which works up to 8mbps, a lot of LLU operators use ADSL2 or 2+ which will go up to 16/24 mbps.
You are also constrained by the physical length and thus the attenuation of the cable between you and your exchange, and how noisy the line is.
Your own internal phone wiring, extensions etc. can also affect the speed you can achieve.
Thats why ISP's always say up to.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
so, if any ISP use normal BT's ADSL then i will get max 6/7Mb
And, if they use ADSL2 & 2+ then i will get upto 24Mb.
So, from AOL i am getting right now only upto 8Mb but if i switch to Be There (who use ADSL2+) i will get up to 24Mb... right ?0 -
All depends on your line do you know how far you are from your exchange , or what your line attenuation is?That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Try posting your line stats on here from your router. It may help us give an indication of the potential speed you may be able to get.0

from Shoreditch exchange my home distance is likely 1km
& my exchange details here : http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=CLSHO0 -
OK then from your stats you have a downstream attenuation of 31 db and your noise margin in 9.5 db.
Using the tool on Sky user you should be able to get 12-14mbps.
