Barclays Standing Orders - Can't add Glasgow Council Tax SO

Hi,

Once again, I'm frustrated by the useless and completely stupid Barclays android app.

I just tried to create a Standing Order to pay for my Council Tax Bills (Glasgow Council).

However, Barclays seem to think all references start with 06, but mine does not (and I know that almost none do!!!).

I can't enter the reference I want, because Barclays recognizes the sort code and account number, automatically add the SO name (Glasgow Council Tax) and forces me to add a reference that starts with 06 followed by 12 digits.

My council tax reference has only 9 digits and does NOT start with 06.

Anyone else has this issue please and maybe a fix?

Pay by direct debit? Most people do.
  • That's not the issue here...

OK. Don't use the useless and completely stupid Barclays android app.
Use a computer. Log into internet banking.
If the same thing happens try deleting the reference starting 06.
If this doesn't work give up on pay a company and use pay a person and enter all the details sort code and account number manually then enter the reference - see below.

    From the Glasgow City website:
To make a payment you will need to know your reference number. It will be a number that starts with an 8, this can be found on a bill or letter from us about council tax. You can also find details about payment instalments on your bill, or alternatively log in to our Self Service Portal for more information.

You can choose to make Direct Debit payments on either the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd or 28th of each month, or every two or every four weeks.

You can make a payment through BACS by quoting our bank details:
    Bank Sort Code: 83-44-00
    Bank Account Number: 00223187
Please ensure that you also quote your Council Tax reference number.

Give Barclays a call and they will set up the SO for you.

Use the app to call them (via Help option) and that way you will get through verified and won't have to go through security.

Not sure why you're trying to pay by SO? The Glasgow website doesn't give SO as a payment option.

So it's perhaps not surprising that when you try to do this the system doesn't work as it may not be set up for SO, only for DD or one-off payments.

In which case it's not Barclays' fault.

It allows payment "via BACS". I.e. you can, of course, pay by SO. Nobody is being forced to pay their CT by DD (although it's actually the most convenient option IMO). So give the OP some slack.

Unfortunately, though, as the OP reported, the Barclays app insists that the reference for such payments starts with 06.

Just set it as a funds transfer to another account and bypass their bill payment facility that pre-populates some details.

Use something like 'GCC Council Tax' as the payee name.

I don't think this does work. Based on sort code and account no, the App overwrites anything you put into the payee name, and pre-fills the Reference field with an irremovable 06.

I haven't tried it in online banking as I cba digging out my login info for that. Has anyone else tried it?

I've just tried and it modifies it as you suggest - strangely the council website also says reference numbers should start 8 - not 06 or 9.

There is a link to a one off debit card payment option in the 'How do I pay section' - I'd use this today and message Barclays / Council to fix it.

    Thanks but that doesn't work. The name of the transfer matters not. What matters are the sort code and the account number, which then populates the Glasgow council tax thing and forces me to use a reference number that doesn't exist;
