Virgin Media wifi only reaches two front rooms of house

Hello :)

I've been with Virgin media for almost 3 years. In that time I've had constant issues with the broadband not reaching the back rooms of the house. I live in a general sized house.

The only rooms we have ever been able to get a good connection is is the living room and front bedroom leaving the dining room, kitchen and two back bedrooms completely wifi free :(

I've contacted them numerous times about this as with two teenage boys wanting to play on their consoles its causing so many arguments.

I have asked for the router to be moved from the living room to the middle of the house - they said they wouldn't do this? I don't mind paying.

I asked for a booster which they provided but it gave only a small connection and caused lagging, again causing frustrated teenagers.

I upgraded to 200mg (sp) and paid £50 a month which seemed to improve the connection a little but not much.

I'm at my wits end :(

I got rid of my tv package with them to try to budget better and in the end got rid of the 200mg and booster because I would have been aswell just getting a full package from them anyway, to save on the broadband costs as they discounted things when I had a whole package with them. And £50 a moth just for broadband seemed ridiculous.

Please could you give me any advice on how to fix this problem :(

I'm currently trying to build a business in hope that I can eventually support us as a family myself one day. I need to move my living room into the dining room at the back (dining room is smaller) as I need the living room space for more organised storage of stock and a packaging area.

I have a Smart TV which the kids only usually watch Netflix and You Tube on so will need the wifi to reach the back dining room.

Thank you so much.

Extremely stressed and confused mum :(

It is nothing to do with Virgin that the Wi-Fi doesn't cover your whole house. You pay them the deliver an internet connection to the router they supply which they do.

You will have to investigate ways to increase coverage in your house. You could look into powerline networking. You could look into Wi-Fi repeaters. You could look into installing physical network cables to the rooms where you need internet.

    get yourself gigabit homeplugs.
Then you can run the consoles on ethernet. forget wifi for online gaming.
most TVs have ethernet to so you can cover that.
Anything of any importance in our house is wired. only phones, tablets and smart devices like speakers etc run on wifi

    Virgin "boosters" were 1.2Gig powerlines.

The OP needs a wireless mesh system, shouldmbe a good deal being black friday
  • Get something like this:

I have one and it works a treat. You can also take with you when you move house. Aldi do one for cheaper:

Their cable modem /router is very poor for Wi-Fi.

A friend cancelled (within the cooling off period) and went back to Talktalk as their router covered her whole flat but Virgin's only her lounge!

I'd recommend a good router or powerline adaptors or a mesh network.

If you have TV boxes in the house, then you can move the router to that position. Do it as a test to see if it sorts the WiFi issues. (you could then buy a virgin spliter kit off ebay if you still need to run TV)

edit: don't buy this, as you have removed your TV package. But try the above

or if you have a central location where the router would do a good job buy a virgin coax extension kit off ebay and move it yourself.

or you could run a network CAT5 or 6 cable upstairs, to a "switch" (network splitter) to run further cables off to the bedrooms or just connect it to a wifi broadcaster
  • Thank you so much everyone for your advice. i'll read each reply in detail shortly and have a look into everything suggested :)

I'm rubbish understanding stuff like this so will do a little research so I understand exactly what all of this means lol thank you so much xx

I think VM did an offer where if you downloaded their app and found black spots for wifi coverage they'd send you boosters, but I can't remember the details.

Unfortunately wifi is highly variable both in devices and how the various methods of house construction affect them, we use a good third party (asus) router which works on both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands and it has trouble with various parts of the house, to the point where we ran network cabling and put in a couple of old routers to provide coverage (powerlines didn't work for us).

You can find a lot of suggestions for weak wifi here:
    https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-WiFi/bd-p/Wireless

I have found the Superhub 3.0 box very sensitive to location. Just moving it from above the TV to next to the TV provided a significant improvement. Also, splitting the 2.4GHz and 5GHz into separate Wifi signals may help. I have an old BT router that I using for a second wifi signal for the back of the house via a £15 powerline adaptor kit from Argos. Many suggest that the Virgin box should only be used as a modem to a better router (see https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-WiFi/new-router/m-p/4108175)
