I moved last month from Telford to Northumberland, used a local removal company and packing service, also paid for a weekend storage, emptied the property on Thursday and delivered to new property following Monday, total cost £3,200. Edit, should have said it was from a 3 bed house to another 3 bed house.

Lucky we decided to wait over the weekend as we didn't get the keys until 4 pm on the Friday (completion day) as one of the solicitors didn't ask for the funds early enough!

Oh and massive bonus is the downsize means we are now mortgage free :)

Is it really bad that I've only ever done DIY when moving, keeps costs right down; I will also do it when I buy my own place next year, hire a van, grab loads of boxes, pack, load, move out and move in.
Depends on the sort of person you are, and what you have acquired in the meantime. You can accumulate a lot of stuff without realising it. I moved DIY in cars the first few times between flats, no trouble, by the next time, had paired up and we lived in a 1 and half bedroom house. Both of us bookish types, and I work from home. We did a DIY. job, hiring a tail lift luton as we had white goods, and had 3 cars (ours and two sets of parents). We moved about 5 miles. It was sheer unadulterated hell. We swore never to do it again. We also swore never to put anything in a loft again. Nearly 30 years later, we had a full (larger) loft, another adult in the house with all their stuff, and nearly 30 years' worth more of books and work kit....though we have been shifting things gradually with a large Transit into the doer-upper, we're still getting the professionals for the big stuff.:o (BTW, took 2 1/2 large transit loads just to empty the loft:D)
  • I’m starting to think I got a VERY good deal last year.

3 bed house with lots of stuff (filled 2 Luton vans and also both cars and father in laws camper van), moved 250 miles (approx 4-4.5hours each way due to the locations). We packed, they loaded on the Saturday (about half a day job), they kept it sat/sun night and delivered Monday morning. Cost £900 inc VAT.

Looking at removals again to maybe go 1/2 mile up the road - 2 bed terrace this time (but we have too much stuff) and verbal guesstimates are coming out around £600 which has made me want to cry a bit!!!

I paid well under 2k for a lorry and 3 men collecting in the morning and then doing a 4-5 hour drive and dropping off the same day. They even re-assembled my bed and bedroom furniture for me and then drove back "home" the same day. I had a 2 bed flat moving to a 2 bed house.

Bizarrely I left only about 10 minutes behind them and they were there at the house waiting for me when I arrived. Still not sure how they managed it because I was doing a good 70mph on the motorways. To this day it still confuses me!!

Personally I wouldn't have wanted to have my furniture held overnight and dropped the next day. I'm a same day girl and if mine could do it with a 4 hour drive, why on earth is 2 1/2 hours stumping them. It took the 3 guys about an hour to load and another hour to unload as they had it down to an artform. Surely professional movers should be able to do a simple move in one day if everything is all ready, boxed and packed ready for them to load up early doors.
  • Sounds expensive. We have just moved from Berkshire to Wiltshire (about 1.5 hour drive). We had a five bed house but are moving into a rented 3 bed so did reduce our furniture somewhat, although it sounds like you don't have a huge amount. We still had a lot of stuff which meant we had a full pantechnicon. We got quotes from three firms, two local, one national big name. The local ones came in at around £1,500 plus VAT and £250 plus VAT for a full pack. The national big name firm was about £1,700 plus VAT.

Both local forms were BAR registered and very reputable. In the end It took two full days to pack and load, a a full day to offload at the new place.
  • Surrey to Kent - 88 miles. 3bed semi. We've had 7 quotes and the cheapest is £2300 inc VAT . Highest was £3400 !!! all without packing. Packing quotes we did have ranged from £360 - £600. Wondering whether they are all trying to make up lost COVID mpney although most said they all worked through lockdown and ,now, they've never been so busy.

My quotes are £1000-£1500 also 3 bed semi but our move is one mile away so I thought that sounded about what I would expect, but I've never done this before so who knows!?
