    Crikey that's a huge amount to pay. I've always done my own packing and got a man with a van for no more than £500!
    Five hundred quid for a proper removals wagon capable of fitting a furnished three-bed house's contents in plus driver and at least two other people for a full working day and ~240 mile round trip?

    I like you. You're funny.

    OP - Is £4k+vat reasonable? I don't know. What do other quotes come in at, or are these the only ones you've contacted?

    The quote is not £4000 - it's £4800 or £4000+vat and that's an awful lot of money for what's being offered.

    When we moved we got several quotes and eventually settled on a local company with a good reputation - not the cheapest but still came in at £1200 to load up and deliver the next day, plus another £30 in pie and chips for the workers.

    Get note quotes to compare and whether they will deliver same day.
  • It's hard to comment without knowing
    * how much stuf (though you hint at that)
    * how far
    * whether you will have packed everything ready for them to you expect them to pack
    * how many men

    * whether a major national company, local family firm, or cash-in-hand man+van.....
    * whether they have proper insurance in place

    Crazy to plan for an overnight- that price proably includes storage which usually is not needed. Yes, keys can be delayed but firms are used to that. And keys may not be delayed! Far better to have everythibg packed the day before (whether by them or yourself) and just load up in the morning and keep fingers crossed.

    High quote - they don't want the job for some reason.

    Last December we paid around £3,400 inc VAT to move a 5-bed house of stuff 300 miles! And that included full packing service. We've just moved (two days ago!) around half an hour away with the same amount of stuff and it cost £1500 inc VAT and packing service.

    Both of those were with fairly large local firms, BAR registered (but not a national like Pickfords, who are more expensive).

    We've used the packing service for our last four moves and it's been a two-day job for short distance (pack one day, move the next) and was a 3-day job for the long-distance one.

    I'd think you're looking for a price nearer £2k but that's totally off the top of my head without knowing if you have any unusual stuff to be moved, or if there are access issues at either end. Also what area you're in - if London you're screwed.

    Get more quotes.

    One tip - you probably don't need the insurance they offer (they'll try to add it on at £200-300). Check your home insurance policy - many providers cover your goods in transit when moving house. If yours does, don't pay the removal company for insurance!

    Packing the stuff yourself will save a big chunk of money.

    While true, in my experience it's not worth saving that money. We've done four moves with the full packing service which added £250-400 each time. Out of the thousands (and potentially tens of thousands) you spend to move house, by the time you've paid stamp duty and fees, this is the one cost that is truly worth it. A removal company can pack up a whole large house in a single day. We'd have had weeks of evenings and weekends spent packing and trying to pack while surrounded by boxes. The speed at which they can pack china and glass is simply incredible. Well worth paying the professionals in my opinion.
  • I moved a 2 bedroom flat no wardrobes or white goods 70 miles ...2 men £180!!!!!!
  • We’re moving 3 properties 2 houses & a flat from Hertfordshire to Lincolnshire & we’re being charged £2500 they’ve supplied packing materials but we’re doing our own packing it’s being down over 2 days

    We paid a little over 3k for a move from Berkshire to Cumbria (we had a 3 bedroom terrace house). We used a local Cumbrian firm (as luck would have it, they were moving someone to London the day before they collected our bits). We packed ourselves but removal company supplied packing material and boxes. They also stored all our stuff over a weekend as there was insufficient time for us to collect keys and them to unload on completion day. We had several quotes and they were best overall we felt. We were very pleased with the service too.

    I think a DIY move is fine if you're moving locally, have many helpers at hand and haven't much to move. Otherwise, cost-cutting gets to the point where it is a false economy. But yes- I think the initial quote sounds high.

    If you get a quote from somebody the other end they might want to come/stay the night before but there'd be no storage of stuff/fees.

    They'd also not be so worried about delays as, once finished, they'd be close to their home.
