Flight change rights

Hi all
I know you have limited rights when flight times change with same company but wondered what rights are if you’re moved onto an indirect and later flight with a different company.
Meant to be flying Qantas tomorrow Singapore to london Heathrow. They have moved us to KLM flight to Amsterdam early Saturday morning and then changing at Amsterdam before coming back to Heathrow. In my view quite a significant change on a long haul flight. Also means the seats we’d booked (one being necessary for my husbands disability) also not necessarily available.
They are offering new flight or refund.
A refund won’t work as we need to get home. But are we also entitled to any compensation? If I’d wanted to I could have booked indirect flights for cheaper but chose direct for comfort and ease.
