What paint to seal plaster

I'm in the process of removing a mist coat so I'm looking for advice on what paint to buy to seal the plaster as I'm confused what to buy after contacting dulux and leyland. I was going to buy dulux retail matt to seal the plaster but dulux said waterbased paint is not designed to be thinned for a mist coat so it's best to use a trade paint like supermatt or vinyl matt as these paints have been designed to be thinned for a mist coat. Leyland told me not to use a contract matt as it's for plaster that's drying out and it can absorb other paints so it's best to use my topcoat thinned down.

You're removing a mist coat and want to mist again; was there something wrong with the original mist coat?

Don't overthink it; just throw a watered-down vinyl-free paint on the walls.

The paint cracked in places and where I removed some architrave you can see the paint haven't bonded to the plaster. Most paint manufactures recommends using a vinyl paint now and all the emulsions I've looked at are wipeable so I'm guessing they have vinyl in them.
  • We used cheap and cheerful - B&Q's own brand matt white emulsion. 2 coats with a 50/50 ratio. Worked well for us.

Why did you use a 50/50 ratio.

That's what our plasterer recommended. We followed that up with another coat of the white and then our final colour.

I watched 3 videos on youtube and one person used armstead trade contractt matt @50/50 and the other person used a retail matt @70/30 and both paint's looked like skimmed milk and I thought that will absorb in to the plaster and evaporate. The 3rd person used Leyland contract matt @ 3 parts paint to 1 part water and you could see paint going on the wall. I have a tub of wilko paint and that says 1 part water to 4 parts paint and that looks runny out of the tin and ready for walls.

Ive just had a bedroom plastered and the plaster says he swears by Johnstones Super Leytex so I went and got some.

Available at screwfix but 15 litres is quite a lot so you may need smaller.

Aren't you hoping it will absorb into the plaster? I thought that was the point! We were advised to use a 50/50 mix of any standard white paint on our new plaster.

Yes you do want the paint to absorb in to the plaster and seal it but the video I watched that did a 50/50 ratio you could see that it didn't have any pigment so it will just evaporate. I've read to use cheap emulsion that don't have vinyl in but I cannot find any places around me that emulsion don't have vinyl in. I would like to know where people are getting this 50/50 from.

We used Leyland trade contract matt white. The tub advises a ratio (can't remember what off the top of my head) but we were advised by two separate plasterers and our builder to dilute 50/50 so that's what we did. I was surprised actually, the coverage was very good with just one coat of the diluted paint. If we were better with a roller, we could have gotten away with just that for a while before painting normally and it would have looked okay.
