Bed not working, have to pay for it to be dismantled and post back

I bought an ottoman bed via eBay/PayPal. One of those with gas lift arms so the bed lifts up for storage. I had to pay someone to assemble it but dispute loads of adjustment, the ottoman did not lift. I had to send loads of emails to the company Beehive Furniture before the contacted me back. They continuously promised to email me with a solution. Chased several times and finally he said he’d send replacement gas lifts to try first before he came up with a solution. I would again have to pay someone to fit these. He promised to email me what solution he would offer if the lifts didn’t work but did not. He agreed to pay the amount of £40 to the handyman to fit them but on PayPal he wrote that if I accepted the £40 the case would close. Obviously this is not what I want I want a bed that works but not to be out of pocket for doing so. So I spent £144 on the bed plus £120 to handyman to assemble. I repeated asked what would happen if the struts did not work. No reply. Therefore I opened an PayPal case. I’m happy for the bed to be returned but it’s going to need dismantling at a cost of £120!! This just isn’t fair so £144 for the bed + £120 to assemble + £120 to dismantle. PayPal have ruled that I can have a refund if I return the bed!!! This just can’t be fair can it? I offered for the company to come and collect the bed but they said no.
I feel heartbroken that potentially I will have spent hundreds of pounds on top of the price of the bed. Please help me.

Who's to say the handyman has not fitted it correctly.
We have one of these beds and it is easy to get the strut mounts fitted incorrectly.Life in the slow lane0 -

Who the **** charges £120 to assemble a bed???????
Forget the bed, your handyman is the one that has ripped you off!! A handyman even at £20 an hour surely didn’t take 6 hours?????
Take it apart yourself, get a full refund, then buy a bed with draws underneath that does not require much assembling.
(Or take up their £40 offer to have new parts fitted)Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Unfortunately PayPal and eBay won't deal in consequential loss so the cost of the handyman will have to be treated separately.
You could raise a money claim online but you will have to judge whether it is worth pursuing.0 -
Am I right in thinking you bought this off Facebook?0

No I bought it off eBay. It took him hours because the bed just wouldn’t lift. He removed the struts, refitted them, adjusted them etc. The seller recently said that he thought the mattress was too heavy for the bed to lift and that the manufacturer and his company should have make it clear when I bought it that there was a weight limit. So because of this the bed didn’t work.
I don’t want a refund AND to keep the bed. I want to return the bed but it is going to cost me to get someone to dismantle it. It’s not my fault that the company did not specify that there was a weight limit to the mattress used. There were also missing end caps the first time round.
No point fitting new struts now according to the seller because the mattress is too heavy (which again, he said should have been made clear)
And sorry I’m on my own and to get a handyman unfortunately is my only option. Like other tradesmen they won’t come out for £20!! And because of the fault it took it apart and returned to try again.0 -
Apart from the ottoman storage bit I assume the rest is ok?
Maybe the seller would agree a partial refund and you keep the faulty bed?
That could be a solution for both of you.0 -
Not finding anything on google.
Are they actually a business, or just a private seller.
How much feedback have they got?
Are they based in Yorkshire?0 -
You need to act within Paypal's timeframe if you want any attempt to get the purchase price of the bed back. If the case times out or you close it, that is it, no second chance with them.
How long ago did you buy the bed? Is there a reason you chose a Paypal case rather than an ebay case?
Paypal do offer 'returns on us' but only to the value of £15 and only if you are eligible.0
