Buying things in US to ship to UK

  • Shipping remains a concern I'll have to investigate.
The following is probably a non runner, in which case ignore !!!

I wonder if any cruise line would ship the speakers as special personal luggage with you on a transatlantic journey ?

Fly to the USA, pick up the ship at New York (or wherever) and accompamy them back to the UK - you get a nice (hopefully) cruise as part of the deal !!!

You'd have to take advice from HMRC on import issues etc.

When you say "large" - what are the dimensions and weight ?

Interesting idea, but I can't imagine it being practical. 4 of the speakers weigh over 60kg each. 1 of the largest speakers is 177.3cm x 40cm x 63.3cm. That's without packaging for 1 of a pair.
  • That is huge. Will any shipping company actually ship them without them being inside a 20ft container?

I think even cruise ships have a weight allowance for suitcases.

Mind you I'm still wondering what speakers cost £32K let alone £57K!

Doing a quick search on Google for a speaker with the dimensions the OP refers to:

    Brings this up:

Which is an exact match for size.

The OP would need to enquire if a cruise line would ship that size and weight of item - at significant extra cost obviously.

He'd need to be a passenger on the cruise to accompany the kit.

    I doubt if it's a runner though.

    Thats an impressive sound system.

If it was me thinking about this I'd be speaking to the manufacturer 1st and get them to price up shipping etc to the UK.

There is a UK distributor for the speakers concerned and if this is an official distributor then it's very unlikely that the manufacturer would be willing to bypass them and ship directly to the OP from another country.
After all, not having to ship around the world is one reason for the manufacturer to have these official distributors in different countries.

Pickfords and many others will crate them and put them in a container either as part container or a full container.
We haven't used Pickfords and I can't remember the name of the company we used to ship all our furniture from HK to UK.
But it was straightforward and they did all the paperwork.

The missus tells me we used a company called Four Winds for HK to UK.
We filled a 20 ft container with our furniture etc and thought the price was very good.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

That's my assumption as well, though I'm in contact with the company and will ask anyway.
