She stuck by her wishes to keep the status quo and went from her lifelong home into hospital and died and the house was returned to the council.
That is similar to what happened to my family. My parents moved into a lovely new council house after the war and when my brothers and I left home we had no further interest. When my mother became ill years later the council were going to put her in sheltered housing but she died in hospital.
The council got a 3 bedroomed council house with a big garden back. They were desperately short of such properties.

He may be happy with the idea, but if you've lived in rented accomodation all your life and are used to just calling up the council to fix things you may not want to take that on later in life.
Far less hassle to carry on renting, particularly if he's getting housing benefit etc.0 -
My mum has recently passed away and I would love to buy our family home, which my dad is still living in.
He obviously has the Right To Buy through the local council, not myself. However, how does it stand if I provide the money for the purchase?
Are you also going to provide the money to cover all the repairs and maintenance that will need doing?0 -

To protect the discount. It's how the council recoup the discount if the property is sold within the first 5 years.0 -
