Can I buy my Dad's Council House

My mum has recently passed away and I would love to buy our family home, which my dad is still living in.
He obviously has the Right To Buy through the local council, not myself. However, how does it stand if I provide the money for the purchase? I am not sure of this is allowed or not?

    You can give him the money to buy it. But I really don't see what benefit that would be to your dad?
  • Does your dad want to be a homeowner or would he prefer to remain a tenant of the property?

    Yes, you could help him to buy it but you couldn't be party to the purchase, assuming you don't live there.

    Then should he need residential/nursing care in the future, the property could be sold to help with the costs.

    Are you still living in your "family home"? Are you over 18? I think you may find it is your Dad's home, not your family home if you're over 18 and have left.


    Would you love to buy it because it's your "family home" or because there is a potential inheritance leveraged by the discount your Dad will have on the right to buy price?

    You need to grow up. This is not your family home it is your dad's home. It was your family home when you were a child however if you are now old enough to get a mortgage it is no longer your family home.



    Starting again what you are asking is if you can buy your dad's home. Please explain how you buying your dad's home will benefit your dad?



    Your dad has at present a secure tenancy with all maintenance paid for. He can live there for the rest of his life with any need for you to buy his home. How can you buying it improve the quality of his life when he loses his secure tenancy?


    There is nothing in this idea for your dad's benefit.

    Err.. the benefit to dad will be OP has given him the money & dad is now the proud owner of the property!


    Taxpayers have given dad a large bung: (I merely comment, no criticism clearly.)


    But I really don't see what benefit that would be to OP. Particularly as dad can now leave property to a new partner, Battersea dogs home or whoever he likes!
  • My gran lived in a council house with my grandad from when it was a new build. He died many years before her, but as she approached the end of life, there was quite a fuss amongst the children (my aunts and uncles) about her buying it before she died. Money was the only motivation.


    She stuck by her wishes to keep the status quo and went from her lifelong home into hospital and died and the house was returned to the council.

    Of course it's allowed. You give your dad a load of money he buys a house that's his to do with what he wants.

    You don't have the right to buy so you can't jointly buy the property with him. You could gift him the money to buy the property (very generous of you) or you could lend him the money to purchase the property securing the loan with a second charge against the property (the council will have the first charge).

    To what end though? Your dad now owns a property. Who will pay for the maintenance, repairs and general upkeep of the property? Your dad since he now owns it? Can he afford to or will you help him out should the boiler pack in, the roof need replacing, etc?
